Civil Service Literary Prize, 1883.
Office of the Civil Service Examination Board,
Wellington, 26th January, 1883.
SUBJECT: "Pauperism, and the Duty of the State in regard
thereto, in the Colonies."
Prizes: Two prizes, one of £10 and one of £5, will be given,
under the following conditions:-
- Competition to be open to all persons under the age of
twenty-five years at this date who have passed either the Junior
or Senior Civil Service Examination, and who are in the Service
at the time of competition. - The prize to be in books or money, at the option of the
prize-taker. - Essays to be legibly written, and on one side of the paper
only. - Essays to be delivered to the Secretary of the Civil Service
Examination Board, Wellington, by the 31st December, 1883. - No competitor to allow his name to appear on his essay,
but to adopt a motto or cypher, which is also to be written on
a sealed envelope containing the author's name, and attached to
the essay. - The prize will not be awarded unless there is an essay
which, in the judgment of the examiners, is of sufficient merit
to entitle the author to receive it. - Competitors are advised to keep copies of their essays, as
those sent to the Board will not be returned.

THE following are the Latin and Greek subjects for the April
and October examinations, 1883:-
LATIN.-Horace, Odes, Books I. and II.; Sallust, Cataline.
GREEK.-Xenophon, Cyropædia, Books I. and II.
N.B.-Candidates who take up Latin will have to pass in
both verse and prose author.

PATENT for Improved Machinery for carrying out the
process commonly known as "Boiling-down."
WILLIAM NELSON, of Tomoana, in the Provincial District of
Hawke's Bay, and Colony of New Zealand, Sheepfarmer, has
deposited at this office a specification of the said invention;
and I have appointed Friday, the 20th day of July next, at
10 o'clock in the forenoon, at this office, to hear the said ap-
plication and all objections thereto; and I require all persons
having an interest in opposing the grant of such Letters Patent
to leave, on or before the 5th day of July next, at this office,
particulars in writing of their objections to the said applica-
tion, otherwise they will be precluded from urging the same.

NOTICE.-MARSHAM EDWIN A BECKETT, of Sydney, an Attor-
ney of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, has been
appointed this day, by his Honour the Chief Justice, a Commis-
sioner of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, in the Colony of
New South Wales, under "The Commissioners of the Supreme
Court Act, 1875," for the purpose of administering and taking
all such oaths, affidavits, and affirmations as in the said Act
mentioned.

Gold-Mining Lease cancelled.

IT is hereby notified that His Excellency the Governor has
been pleased to pronounce the under-mentioned gold-
mining lease cancelled, and that the ground is now open
for application as if no lease of the said ground had ever been
applied for:--
Richard Helms; 16 acres 2 roods 3 perches, Section 7,
Block V., District of Mawheranui, Nelson South-West Gold
Fields. No. 1090.

Gold-Mining Leases to be granted.
IN conformity with the thirty-seventh section of "The Mines
Act, 1877," and with the regulations made under that Act
for the granting of leases for gold-mining purposes, it is hereby
notified that it is intended to grant leases of Crown lands for
gold-mining purposes to the applicants specified in the annexed
Schedule, unless there shall be valid objections against such
leases.
Objections to the granting of such leases, stating the grounds
of objection, must be made in writing, and lodged with the
Warden at Cromwell on or before the 15th day of February,
1883.
Copy of the applications made and plans annexed may be seen
at the Warden's Office at Cromwell.
