month having occurred in Dunedin, viz., 11 out of 15 in September, and 12 out of 18 in October. Diphtheria caused
3 deaths last month, all in Christchurch. Two deaths occurred from typhoid fever, 1 in Wellington and 1 in Christchurch.
Constitutional Diseases.—There was a slight decrease in the number of deaths from these diseases in October as com-
pared with September, the number having been 17 in October and 19 in September. Cancer caused 5 deaths in October,
against 3 in September, and phthisis 9 deaths in October, against 11 in September.
Local Diseases.—Diseases of this class caused the same number (51) of deaths in September and October; but there
was a variation in the numbers in each order, for, while there was a considerable proportionate decrease in deaths from
diseases of the nervous system and of the digestive organs, those caused by diseases of the respiratory organs increased
from 18 in September to 27 in October.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal
zymotic diseases of the miasmatic order, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These
causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important
special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely
connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
