Analyses of Tinned Provisions at Christchurch.

Colonial Secretary’s Office, Wellington, 6th September, 1882.

THE following report of analyses of tinned provisions obtained in Christchurch is published for general information.

THOMAS DICK.

REPORT on the Analysis of Twelve Samples of Tinned Provisions.

Name of Sample. Maker’s Name. Where Obtained. Soldered on Inside or Outside. Inside Solder tested for Lead. Inside Surface of Tin Tested for Lead. Liquid Contents Concentrated and Tested. Contents Incinerated and Ash-tested.
Mackerel (fresh) J. T. Morton, London J. Walker, grocer Inside Present Nil Nil Nil.
Herring (fresh) J. T. Morton, London J. White, grocer Inside Present Nil Nil Nil.
Oysters J. Kensett and Co. J. White, grocer Inside Present Nil Nil Nil.
Sardines F. Candy Inside Present Nil Nil Nil.
Lobster J. T. Morton J. King Inside Present Nil Nil Nil.
Salmon Columbia River Packing Company F. Candy Inside Present Nil Nil Nil.
Apple jam J. Thompson, Christchurch F. Candy Outside Nil Nil Nil.
Damson jam C. E. Knight, Hobart J. King Outside Nil Nil Nil.
Raspberry jam Peacock J. White Outside Nil Nil Nil.
Marmalade J. Keiller and Sons J. Walker Inside Present Nil Nil Nil.
Preserved peaches T. J. Myer and Co. J. King Inside Present Nil Nil Trace.
Preserved plums Peacock J. Fisher Outside Nil Nil Nil.

It will be seen by the above analyses that in only one case was a trace of lead found in any of the samples, and this only where a portion was in contact with the solder of the can. The general contents when further tested gave not a trace. In one or two cases, lead was apparently found in the tin coating, but further examination showed that this was due to the fact that the solder had run as a thin film into the tin surface. In no case did the true tin surface contain lead. In none of the samples examined were any loose lumps of solder found, yet from my own experience I know that lumps of solder are very frequently found in tinned provisions, and in such cases any acid contents, such as fruit, would be almost certain, in tins, to become contaminated with the lead. The method of soldering on the outside, which is now being adopted, is certainly much the safest mode of fastening the tins, and prevents even the liability of lead contamination.
