NOTES FOR DECEMBER, 1881.

Auckland. Wet weather prevailed, although at intervals some fine bright days; maximum rain recorded on 28th, 1-165 in.;
S.W. and W. winds prevailed and moderate.

Wellington. The 1st and 2nd, fine, N.W.; heavy rain on 3rd from S.E.; fine on 4th, and pleasant on morning of 5th,
N.W., in afternoon changed to S.W., and heavy rain in night with thunder; continued showery, with intervals of fine up to
21st, 2-25 in. recorded on 20th, the maximum; fine and dry remainder of month, but strong N.W. wind; twenty-five days of
N.W. wind, and usually very strong from about 11th, especially on 19th, 21st, 29th, and 30th.

Lincoln. Frequent light showers in early part, but fine towards middle of month; maximum rain recorded on 20th, 38 in ;
prevailing winds from N.E., S.W., and N.W., and stormy on 22nd and 31st from latter quarter.

Dunedin. Very showery, especially during middle of month; maximum rainfall on 13th, 73 in.; end of month very warm
and fine; winds generally from N.E., S.W., and W., and moderate; thunder on 30th.

Waitangi, Chatham Islands. Showery early part; the maximum rain recorded on 13th, 19 in.; prevailing W. and N.W.
winds; stormy on 25th from S.W., otherwise winds moderate.

GENERAL REMARKS. On the whole a wet month, with at times strong winds, chiefly from S.W. and N.W., and occasional
thunder. Earthquakes occurred at Wellington on 3rd at 6.30 a.m., slight; on 23rd at 7.13 a.m. and 10.54 p.m., E. to W.,
slight; and 31st at 1 p.m., slight: at Lincoln on 5th at 7.37 a.m., on 6th at 5.6 a.m., and 9th at 5.22 a.m., all slight: at
Dunedin a slight shock on 5th.

The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 387, against 454 in December, being a decrease of 67. The deaths
amounted to 134 in February, a decrease of 39 on the number for January.

Of the above deaths, males contributed 64; females, 70. 67 of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being
50.00 per cent. of the whole number; 47 of these were of children under one year of age.

THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 years of age and 5 years and
upwards, and the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each cause in the Boroughs of Auckland, Wellington, Christ.
church, and Dunedin that were registered during the Month of February, 1882.
