NOTES FOR OCTOBER, 1881.
Auckland. Showery, with prevailing S.W. wind, and strong on four days; maximum rainfall on 23rd, 830 in.; occasionally fine in
early part; distant thunder on 23rd.
Wellington. Fine and bright from 1st to 6th, when it came on rain and strong N.W. wind at night, and showery to 8th; generally
fine from 9th to 12th, though strong winds on 11th and 12th, N.W., changing to S.W.; showery and equally 13th to 15th, N.W., heavy
squalls of wind at times; then followed fine bright weather to 22nd; wet on 23rd from S.W., wind moderate; 1.03 in. rain recorded on
24th, maximum for month; rain continued on 24th and 25th from S.E.; remainder of month fine and bright.
Lincoln. Fine N.E. generally up to 23rd, from which date to end it was showery from S.W.; maximum rain recorded on 24th, '45 in.;
strong N.E. on 17th, otherwise moderate; hail on 24th and 25th.
Dunedin. Commencement and end of month showery; pleasant during middle of month; maximum rain on 2nd, 36 in.; prevailing
S.W. wind and strong on 5th, 10th, and 14th, the latter from N.W.
Waitangi, Chatham Islands. Showery, with intervals of fine bright weather; maximum rainfall on 5th, 26 in.; strong S.W. wind
on 10th and 30th, from which quarter it prevailed; hail on 27th.
GENERAL REMARKS.---Fine weather, with moderate N.W. and S.W. winds, and small rainfall.
NOTES FOR NOVEMBER, 1881.
Auckland. Generally fine early part, but towards end heavy rain, the maximum falling on 29th, 855 in.; prevailing S.W. wind, and
strong on three days; thunder on 23rd, 27th, and 28th.
Wellington. Exceedingly fine and bright up to 18th; wind chiefly N.W. and moderate, except on 9th and 10th, when it blew fresh;
rather showery remainder of month, but some pleasant days; wind generally S.E., but mild; maximum rain recorded on 26th, 48 in.;
prevailing wind, N.W.
Lincoln. Fine bright weather almost throughout; some light showers; the maximum rainfall recorded on 29th, 26 in.; prevailing
N.E. wind and moderate, except on 5th, when it blew hard.
Dunedin.-Pleasant weather, though frequent light showers; the maximum rainfall recorded on 6th, 650 in.; prevailing S.W. and W.
winds, and moderate.
Waitangi, Chatham Islands. Very fine, only three days of rain, the maximum on 21st, 42 in.; S.W. and W. winds prevailed, and,
except on 23rd, moderate.
GENERAL REMARKS.-Except in the north the rainfall has been under the average and the weather on the whole fine, with moderate
S.W. and W. winds prevailing.
