Volunteer Rules and Regulations.

ORDER IN COUNCIL.

At the Government House, at Wellington, this
twenty-second day of November, 1882.

Present:

HIS EXCELLENCY THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THE
GOVERNMENT IN COUNCIL.

WHEREAS by an Act of the General Assembly
of New Zealand intituled "The Volunteer Act,
1881," power is given to the Governor in Council from
time to time to make, alter, and revoke regulations
respecting the enrolment, discipline, training, exer-
cise, accoutrements, clothing, equipment, conveyance,
pay, rations, and lodging of the Volunteer Force or
any part thereof, and respecting the several other
matters specified in the said Act, and providing gene-
rally for the more effectual carrying out of the said
Act; with power to appoint penalties, not exceeding
five pounds for each offence, for any breach of the
provisions of the said Act or of such regulations:

And whereas by an Order in Council dated the
nineteenth day of October, one thousand eight
hundred and seventy-four, certain regulations were
made for the purposes aforesaid: And whereas it is
expedient now to revoke the same and make other
regulations in lieu thereof:

Now, therefore, His Excellency the Administrator
of the Government of the Colony of New Zealand,
in pursuance of the said recited power and authority,
doth, by this present order, by and with the consent
of the Executive Council, revoke the aforesaid rules
and regulations, and doth make the rules and regu-
lations specified in the Schedule hereinafter written,
and doth appoint the penalties for breaches thereof
respectively therein set forth.

SCHEDULE.
REGULATIONS OF THE VOLUNTEER FORCE OF
NEW ZEALAND.
ENROLMENT.

  1. Volunteer corps are raised under the Volunteer Act in
    force for the time being. Persons enrolled in Volunteer corps
    will be subject to the provisions of that Act and of any Acts
    amending it, and to all rules and regulations which may from
    time to time be made for the maintenance, discipline, and
    training of the Volunteer Forces, by the authority of the
    Governor in Council.

  2. Every person, upon enrolling himself, will sign an engage-
    ment to serve until lawfully discharged, and take the oath pre-
    scribed by the Act. The oath to be administered by a Justice
    of the Peace, whose signature will be affixed to the attestation
    paper (Form V.-1). This document, when produced in Court
    and the Volunteer identified as the person named therein, will
    be sufficient evidence, for the purpose of recovering fines, that
    the man has been sworn. The attestation paper duly numbered
    and recorded is to be kept in the District Office.

  3. No person under eighteen years of age will be enrolled
    as a Volunteer except by special authority, or in case of boys
    who are to be trained as musicians, who may be enrolled at
    twelve years of age with the sanction of the Officer Command-
    ing the District, not to exceed two for each company.

  4. Apprentices are not to be enrolled without consent in
    writing of their masters.

  5. Enrolments will take place half-yearly, namely, in the
    months of January and July in each year; and persons desir-
    ous of joining the Force must submit their names to the Officer
    commanding the corps they wish to enter, for his approval,
    must give him the following particulars: Age, height,
    occupation, and address. Provided that the Governor may
    direct an enrolment at other times if he shall see fit.

  6. A Volunteer shall be entitled to his discharge at any time
    after a year's service on application to his Commanding Officer,
    provided he shall have given not less than three calendar months'
    notice of his intention to make the application; such notice to
    expire in January or July.

  7. No person who has been discharged for misconduct, or any
    member of a corps which has been disbanded for the same
    reason, will be readmitted into the Force.

  8. No member of one corps shall be enrolled in another
    until he has legally ceased to be a member of his former
    corps.
