SECOND LIGHT ON AMÉDÉE ISLET, NOUMEA.

Marine Department,
Wellington, 10th October, 1881.

INFORMATION has been received from His Ex-
cellency the Governor of New Caledonia that a
Second Light has been placed on Amédée Islet at
the entrance of the Straits of Noumea. This light,
when in line with the light already on the islet, will
mark the middle of the strait north of Bulari, that is,
N. 49° E. (magnetic).
The light is a fixed red light of the fourth order,
and will be visible six miles. The base of the tower,
of masonry, octagonal, and painted white, is about
30 feet above the level of low water, and is sur-
mounted by a cast-iron column 20 feet high, thus
making the light about 50 feet above the same level.
This light was to have been lighted on the 1st
September last.
