each member, specifying the business to be trans-
acted at such special meeting, and no other business
than that so specified shall be transacted at such
meeting.
3. Any three of the said Board shall form a
quorum. Any meeting may be adjourned from time
to time.
4. The members of the Board shall, at their first
meeting, and thereafter at an annual meeting to be
held on the first Wednesday in March in every suc-
ceeding year thereafter, elect one of themselves to
be Chairman, who may join in the discussion, and
shall have an original as well as a casting vote. The
Chairman shall hold office until the election of his
successor.
5. If at any meeting the Chairman is not present
at the time appointed for holding the same, the mem-
bers present shall choose some one of their number
to be Chairman of such meeting.
6. If, by resignation, death, or incapacity, or other-
wise, the office of Chairman shall be or become vacant,
the members may at any monthly or special meeting
appoint a Chairman.
7. All questions shall be determined by the majority
of votes of the members of the Board present at a
meeting.

Amended Regulations respecting Mineral Leases under
"The Mines Act, 1877."

WHEREAS by the fifty-first section of "The
Mines Act, 1877" (herein referred to as "the
said Act"), it is enacted that it shall be lawful for
the Governor, subject to the provisions of the said
Act, from time to time to make, alter, amend, and
revoke rules and regulations for all or any of the
purposes thereinafter enumerated: And whereas by
the fifty-third section of the said Act it is enacted
that the rules and regulations contained in the
Appendices to the said Act shall be deemed to be the
first rules and regulations made under the fifty-first
and fifty-second sections of the said Act: And
whereas it is expedient that Regulation number
twenty-seven respecting the area of mineral leases,
and Regulation number twenty-eight respecting the
consideration under which such leases are granted,
under Appendix A to the said Act, should be amended,
in order that these regulations may be reconciled to
the provisions of sections forty-one and fifty-one of
the said Act:

Now, therefore, I, James Prendergast, the Admin-
istrator of the Government of the Colony of New
Zealand, do hereby order that the regulations referred
to above shall be amended as hereinafter mentioned-
that is to say, Regulations twenty-seven and twenty-
eight respecting mineral leases under Appendix A of
the said Act are hereby revoked, and the following
substituted in lieu thereof:-

  1. The extent of the areas of leases shall be
    (except in special cases hereinafter provided for)-

For coal leases, an area not less than ten acres
nor more that three hundred and twenty
acres.
For all other leases under these regulations, an
area not less than one acre nor more than two
hundred acres.

  1. The rents reserved shall be as follow:-
    For coal leases, an acreage annual rent, payable
    in advance, of not less than sixpence nor more

than five shillings, or a royalty on every ton
raised not exceeding one shilling.

For mineral leases other than coal, an acreage
annual rent, payable in advance, of one shilling,
or, by way of royalty, a sum not less than one-
hundredth and not more than one-fiftieth of
the mineral raised, to be payable as in the
leases shall be expressed, and to be estimated
on the value of the mineral or metal at the
mouth of the mine.

As witness the hand of His Excellency the
Administrator of the Government, this
fourteenth day of September, one thou-
sand eight hundred and eighty-one.

The above amended regulations respecting mineral
leases under "The Mines Act, 1877," are in lieu of
the regulations published in the New Zealand Gazette
No. 71, of the 8th of September, 1881.

Altering Times of Meeting of the Land Board of
the Land District of Southland.

ARTHUR GORDON, Governor.

WHEREAS by the first subsection of section
twenty-five of "The Land Act, 1877," it is
provided that the Land Boards of the respective land
districts shall sit at the Land Office in the principal
town of the land district, at certain times to be
determined by the Board and approved of by the
Governor, and published in the New Zealand Gazette:
And whereas by a warrant under the hand of His
Excellency the Governor, dated the fifteenth day of
January, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-
eight, and published in the New Zealand Gazette of
the seventeenth day of January, one thousand eight
hundred and seventy-eight, it was appointed that the
Land Board of Southland should sit on each Thurs-
day in every week, at half-past twelve o'clock p.m.:
And whereas the Land Board of Southland did,
on the twenty-fifth day of August, one thousand
eight hundred and eighty-one, pass a resolution
recommending that the time of sitting should be
altered, and it is expedient to give effect to the said
recommendation:

Now, therefore, I, Arthur Hamilton Gordon, the
Governor of New Zealand, in exercise of the power
and authority vested in me in that behalf, do hereby
fix and determine that the ordinary meetings of the
Land Board of the Land District of Southland shall
be held each Thursday in every week, at eleven
o'clock a.m., commencing on Thursday, the fifteenth
day of September, one thousand eight hundred and
eighty-one, instead of every Thursday, at half-past
twelve o'clock p.m., as heretofore appointed.

As witness the hand of His Excellency the
Governor, this eighth day of September,
one thousand eight hundred and eighty-
one.

Exchange of Land in Provincial District of Otago.

ARTHUR GORDON, Governor.

WHEREAS by the one hundred and forty-eighth
section of "The Land Act, 1877," power is
given to the Governor to exchange any land set apart
as a reserve for other land of equal value as he may
