NOTES FOR JANUARY, 1881.

Auckland.—Weather cool and showery; wind uniformly moderate and chiefly from N.E. and W., strong from latter quarter on 18th
and 19th; thunder on 2nd; maximum rain recorded on 13th, 835 in.
Wellington.—Showery up to 6th, 1.14 in. rain recorded on 3rd, the maximum for the month; very fine, bright, warm S.E. weather to
17th; showery on night of 17th; stormy from 18th to 23rd, N.W., reaching a gale on 21st; remainder of month warm and pleasant,
chiefly from N.W.; prevailing S.E. and N.W. winds; heavy thunder on night of 2nd, vivid lightning, and heavy rain; lightning on night of
4th, with rain.
Lincoln.—Generally fine, with prevailing S.E. and N.E. winds; stormy from latter quarter on 27th, 28th, and 29th; thunder on 17th;
hail on 20th; maximum rain registered on 19th, 1.37 in.
Dunedin.—Pleasant, warm weather, but with frequent light showers, the maximum fall recorded on 4th, 490 in.; moderate variable
winds, frequent calms; on 21st rather fresh breeze from N.W.
Waitangi, Chatham Islands.—Pleasant weather; very small rainfall, the maximum recorded on 20th, 15 in.; prevailing S.W. wind,
and strong on seven days from that quarter.
GENERAL REMARKS.—Fine weather, small rainfall and moderate winds; temperature rather below average. Earthquake occurred at
Wellington on 3rd, at 8.30 a.m., slight.

NOTES FOR FEBRUARY, 1881.

Auckland.—Hot and dry, with generally moderate to light winds, chiefly N.E. and S.W.; on 27th and 28th strong wind from N.E.,
shifting to S.W., with heavy rain, 770 in. recorded on 28th, the maximum for month, and sudden fall of barometer, followed by rapid rise.
Wellington.—Very fine, bright, dry weather almost throughout the month, with prevailing N.W. wind and moderate, except on 8th, 9th,
14th, and 19th, when it blew strong from that quarter; also stormy on 26th from N.E.; slight showers of rain at intervals, rather heavy
on 26th, 90 in. recorded on 27th, the maximum for month; at times very sultry.
Lincoln.—Fine, warm weather, with light showers of rain at intervals, the maximum fall recorded on 21st, 16 in.; prevailing N.W.
wind, and moderate; on 11th strong wind from N., on 15th from S.E., and 25th from N.W.; hail on 21st.
Dunedin.—Remarkably fine, with a few light showers of rain, the maximum fall being 320 in.; prevailing S.W. and W. winds, and
moderate.
Waitangi, Chatham Islands.—Fine month; light showers until 27th, when it rained heavily, 1.32 in. recorded on 28th; prevailing
N. and N.W. winds, and moderate.
GENERAL REMARKS.—Remarkably fine throughout; at times very hot; temperature in excess of average, and very small rainfall;
light winds.
