railway from Christchurch to Lyttelton, from the
main line, Hurunui-Waitaki, being one of the rail-
ways specified in "The Public Works Act, 1879,"
was defined: And whereas pursuant to the one
hundred and twenty-fifth section of "The Public
Works Act, 1876," the Minister for Public Works
has caused to be made and, on the twenty-eighth
day of January, one thousand eight hundred and
eighty-one, to be deposited in the office of the
Registrar of the Supreme Court at Christchurch,
such maps and plans as were necessary to explain
the said portion of the said branch line of railway
and the land through which the same passes, and
such maps and plans were referred to in such Pro-
clamation as aforesaid: And whereas "The Public
Works Act, 1879," enacts that such of the railways
mentioned therein as are unfinished may be com-
pleted under the provisions of "The Public Works
Act, 1876," "The Public Works Act 1876 Amend-
ment Act, 1878," and "The Public Works Act,
1879:" And whereas the land described in the
Schedule hereto is required to be taken for the said
portion of the said branch line of railway:
Now, therefore, I, Arthur Hamilton Gordon, Gover-
nor of the Colony of New Zealand, in exercise of the
powers and authorities conferred by the sixth section
of "The Public Works Act 1876 Amendment Act,
1878," and of every power and authority in that
behalf, do hereby proclaim and declare that the land
described in the Schedule hereto is taken for the said
portion of the said branch line of railway.
SCHEDULE.
ALL that piece or parcel of land (coloured pink) con-
taining by admeasurement 12.1 perches, being portion
of St. Davids Street, commencing at a point on the
western side of the said St. Davids Street, situate
3.5 links distant from, in a southerly direction, the
southern boundary of Norwich Quay with the
western boundary of St. Davids Street; thence
along the western side of St. Davids Street, 116.7
links, to the original high-water-mark line; thence
along said high-water-mark line to the eastern side
of St. Davids Street; thence along eastern side of
St. Davids Street, 34.4 links; thence to the com-
mencing point, 138 links.
Also all that piece or parcel of land (coloured
green) containing by admeasurement 2.2 perches,
commencing at the junction of the eastern side of St.
Davids Street with original high-water-mark line;
thence following high-water-mark line south-easterly,
115 links or thereabouts; thence north-westerly, by
lines 114 and 16.2 links respectively, to the eastern
side of St. Davids Street; thence along the eastern
side of St. Davids Street to the commencing point,
35 links.
The above parcels of land being situate in the
Borough of Lyttelton, Provincial District of Canter-
bury, and are more particularly delineated upon the
plan marked P.W.D. 8130, deposited in the office of
the Minister for Public Works at Wellington, in the
Provincial District of Wellington.
Given under the hand of His Excellency the
Honorable Arthur Hamilton Gordon,
Knight Grand Cross of the Most Dis-
tinguished Order of Saint Michael and
Saint George, Her Majesty's High
Commissioner for the Western Pacific,
Governor and Commander-in-Chief in
and over Her Majesty's Colony of New
Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-
Admiral of the same; and issued under
the Seal of the said Colony, at the

Defining the Middle Line of Portion of the Maka-
rewa to Riverton and Orepuki Railway, with Branch
to Otautau and Nightcaps Coal Field (Western
Railways), Riverton Township Extension.

A PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS the line of railway from Makarewa
River to Riverton and Orepuki, with branch to
Otautau and Nightcaps Coal Field (Western Rail-
ways), is one of the railways specified in the First
Schedule to "The Public Works Act, 1879," and
which Act is therein declared to be a special Act
authorizing the construction of such railway; and
the same is unfinished, and it has been determined to
construct and maintain a further portion of such
railway:
Now, therefore, I, Arthur Hamilton Gordon, the
Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in exer-
cise and in pursuance of the powers and authori-
ties conferred on me by sections one hundred and
twenty-two, one hundred and twenty-three, one
hundred and twenty-four, and one hundred and
twenty-five of "The Public Works Act, 1876," and
in exercise of every other power and authority
enabling me in that behalf, do hereby proclaim and
declare that the middle line of the said further portion
of the said railway shall be from a point on the River-
ton to Otautau Railway to a point on the north-
western side of Augusta Street, in the Township of
Riverton Extension, all within the Provincial Dis-
trict of Otago, Colony of New Zealand, as defined
and set forth in the Schedule hereto. The said
middle line and the land through which the same
passes are set forth in the map and plan marked
P.W.D. 8151, and authenticated for the purposes of
this Proclamation by the signature of the Honorable
John Hall, Minister acting for the Minister for Public
Works, and which said map and plan is deposited in
the office of the Registrar of the Supreme Court at
Invercargill, in the Provincial District of Otago.
SCHEDULE.
COMMENCING at a point on the Riverton to Otautau
Railway, the said point being within the limits of
deviation of a portion of the railway, Riverton to
Otautau, as proclaimed the 10th September, 1874,
and published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 49,
of the 11th September, 1874, and proceeding thence
in a generally north-westerly, easterly, and southerly
direction for a distance of 91 chains or thereabouts,
and passing in, into, through, or over the following
lands: Block VI., Jacob's River Hundred; reserve,
Section 3, Riverton Extension Township; Block II.,
Sections Nos. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 17, 16, 27, 14, and 15;
Block III., Sections Nos. 17, 18, 19, and 21; Block
IV., Sections Nos. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 19, and 22; Block V.,
Sections Nos. 4, 3, 2, 18, 19, and 20; Block VI., Sec-
tions Nos. 6, 3, and 4; and terminating at a point
on the north-western side of Augusta Street; all
within the Provincial District of Otago, Colony of
New Zealand; and including all adjoining and inter-
vening places, lands, roads, reserves, streams, rivers,
