NOTES FOR JULY, 1881.

Auckland. A showery month although no very heavy rainfall, the maximum being 710 in. recorded on 9th; prevailing S. and S.W.
winds, and generally fresh.

Wellington. First three days wet and stormy from N.W.; fine, bright, pleasant from 4th to 15th, wind changeable and light; dull
weather commenced on 16th, wind easterly, continued rain and generally stormy and cold to end of month; wind between S.E. and
S.W.; maximum rain recorded on 20th, 2.45 in., most unpleasant during this period; thunder on 3rd, hail on 30th.

Lincoln. Dull, but tolerably fine early part; wind northerly, but from 19th to end heavy rain chiefly from S.W., the maximum fall
being 3.2 in. on 20th; wind very strong from 19th to 22nd from S.W.; hail on 30th; fog on 26th and 27th.

Dunedin. Changeable weather, light and frequent showers; maximum rainfall on 4th, 254 in.; prevailing W. and S.W. winds, strong
on 12th, but otherwise moderate.

Waitangi, Chatham Islands. Showery generally; maximum rain recorded on 31st, 62 in.; changeable wind and moderate; stormy on
4th from S.W.

GENERAL REMARKS.-Early part of month generally fine, wind northerly, but latter part showery, very heavy rain occurring at Wel-
lington; wind chiefly S.W. during this period; temperature in excess of average; earthquake at Wellington on 6th, at 5.15 a.m., and 12th,
at 2.51 a.m., both slight.

NOTES FOR AUGUST, 1881.

Auckland.-Wet, unpleasant, dull weather, with S.W. and W. winds, and frequently strong; maximum rain on 15th, 1.08 in.

Wellington. Showery on 1st from S.E., and cold S.E. on 2nd; from 3rd to 14th pleasant, with occasional showers; wind chiefly W.
and N.W., and cool; strong wind on 7th and 9th; night of 14th changed to S.E., and cold; wet weather continued until 20th; hail on 17th
and 18th; next three days fine from N.W.; on night of 22nd changed to S.E., and unpleasant, wet, cold weather up to 27th; 1'38 in. rain
recorded on 27th, maximum for month; tolerably fine remainder of month. Sudden change from N.W. to S.W. on evening of 31st, bringing
hail and rain-squall, clearing off at night; snow on hills on 23rd; lightning on 28th.

Lincoln. Tolerably fine early part, but towards latter part of month showery; 1.6 in. rain recorded on 26th, the maximum; strong
W. wind on 9th and 10th, and strong from N.W. on 29th, otherwise moderate and changeable; frequent calms; snow on 23rd; hail on
30th; fog on 11th.

Dunedin. Changeable weather, but with little rain; the maximum fall recorded on 8th, 56 in.; cold and squally towards end of
month; prevailing S.W. wind, and strong on 9th, 30th, and 31st; snow on 29th and 30th.

Waitangi, Chatham Islands. Beginning and end of month showery, also on 16th and 17th; the maximum fall recorded on 18th,
65 in., otherwise fine; wind changeable and moderate; thunder on 29th, 30th, and 31st.

GENERAL REMARKS.-Showery and rather squally weather experienced; wind chiefly S.W.; rainfall slightly in excess, and temperature
above the average, not severe for the time of year; earthquake on 8th, at Wellington, at 10.25 a.m., very slight.
