Regulations for the Public Prisons of the Colony,
under "The Prisons Act, 1873," as to Jewish
Sabbath, &c.

A PROCLAMATION.

W HEREAS by the fifteenth section of "The
Prisons Act, 1873," it is, amongst other things,
enacted that the Governor may from time to time, by
Proclamation published in the New Zealand Gazette,
make rules as to him shall seem fit touching the
duties of the officers of public prisons, the treatment
of the prisoners confined therein, and generally as
may be necessary for the good management and
government of such prisons, and from time to time
to alter or revoke any such rules as aforesaid: And
whereas by a Proclamation bearing date the seven-
teenth day of March, one thousand eight hundred
and seventy-five, and published in the New Zealand
Gazette of the eighteenth day of March, one thousand
eight hundred and seventy-five, certain regulations
were made for public prisons: And whereas it is
expedient to alter such regulations :

Now, therefore, I, Hercules George Robert Robin-
son, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in
pursuance and exercise of the power and authority
vested in me in this behalf as aforesaid, do hereby
proclaim and declare that, from the first day of Sep-
tember next, the following regulation shall be in
force within all the public prisons of the colony.

REGULATION.

ANY prisoner who is a Jew is not to be compelled to
labour on his Sabbath, or on any of the following
sacred festivals β€”

  • The New Year Festival ... Two days.
  • Day of Atonement ... One day.
  • Festival of Tabernacles ... Four days.
  • Passover ... Four days.
  • Pentecost ... Two days.

As the dates of these festivals vary, they will be
communicated to those gaolers annually who intimate
that they have Jewish prisoners in custody.

Chief in and over Her Majesty's Colony
of New Zealand and its Dependencies,
and Vice-Admiral of the same; and issued
under the Seal of the said Colony, at the
Government House, at Wellington, this
nineteenth day of August, in the year of
our Lord one thousand eight hundred and
eighty.

Proclamation of Boundaries of Wairau and Pelorus,
and Queen Charlotte Sound Mining Districts.

A PROCLAMATION.

W HEREAS by "The Mines Act, 1877," it is
enacted that it shall be lawful for the
Governor from time to time, by Proclamation, to
constitute and appoint any portion of the Colony of
New Zealand to be a mining district under the said
Act, to assign boundaries to such district, to enlarge,
contract, or otherwise alter such boundaries, and to
declare by what local name every such district shall
be designated; and, until the Governor shall other-
wise order, every gold field proclaimed or constituted,
at the time of the commencement of the said Act
shall be and be deemed a mining district under the
said Act :

And whereas certain portions of the Provincial
District of Marlborough have from time to time
been proclaimed gold fields and mining districts
under the provisions of the Gold Fields Acts then in
force, and under the provisions of "The Mines Act,
1877," by the Governor, and also by the Superin-
tendents for the time being of Marlborough, under
powers delegated to them by the Governor:

And whereas it is desirable to cancel all former
Proclamations concerning the boundaries of the said
gold fields, and to reproclaim the boundaries of
mining districts in the said Provincial District of
Marlborough :
