The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases.
POPULATION.—In the cases marked thus * the numbers given are for the 3rd March, 1878, according to the census then
taken; in the other cases the numbers have been estimated for the 1st January, 1879.
The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 448, against 443 in November, being an actual increase of 5, although,
on reference to last month's report, there would be an apparent decrease of 26, as in that report the births in Wellington were
given as 107 instead of 78, the Registrar having in error given the number occurring in his district instead of those only in the
borough. The deaths amounted to 170 in December, being an increase of 46 on the number in November.
Of the above deaths, males contributed 109; females, 61. 90 of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being
53.53 per cent. of the whole number; 72 of these were of children under one year of age.
THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 years of age and 5 years and
upwards, and the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each cause in the Boroughs of Auckland, Wellington, Christ-
church, and Dunedin that were registered during the month of December, 1879.
