School Act, 1878," His Excellency the Governor
has been pleased to appoint

The Hon. HENRY JOHN MILLER, M.L.C., and
SAMUEL EDWARD SHRIMSKI, Esq., M.H.R.,
to be Members of the Board of Governors of the
Waitaki High School.

Public Libraries Subsidy.

MUNICIPAL and other Governing Bodies that
have levied a "library rate" in accordance with
the provisions of "The Public Libraries Act, 1869,"
are requested to lodge with the Secretary, Education
Department, Wellington, on or before the 10th Feb-
ruary, 1880, any claim they may have for a share of
the current vote for Public Libraries in respect of
the amount of such library rate actually collected up
to the 31st January, 1880.

Inviting Tenders for West Coast of Middle Island
Steam Service.

General Post Office,
Wellington, 20th January, 1880.

SEALED Tenders will be received at the General
Post Office, Wellington, until noon of SATUR-
DAY, the 21st day of FEBRUARY proximo, for the
performance, during a period of twelve months, of a
steam service every four weeks between the Ports of
either Greymouth or Hokitika, and Okarito (when
practicable), Haast River, Jackson's Bay, Martin's
Bay, and Milford Sound.

The service shall be performed in accordance with
a time-table to be furnished by the Postmaster-
General, and shall commence on a date to be here-
after agreed upon.

Tenders to state the name, tonnage, and horse-power
of the vessel or vessels to be employed in the service.
The lowest or any tender wil not necessarily be
accepted.

Tenders to be addressed to the Hon. the Post-
master-General, and indorsed, "Tender for West
Coast of Middle Island Steam Service."

THE following sections of the Property Assessment
Act are published for general information.

  1. Every company, including banking and insur-
    ance companies, carrying on business in New Zealand
    at the commencement of this Act shall at all times be
    represented by a person residing in the colony ; and
    a place within the colony shall be appointed from
    time to time by every such company as aforesaid at
    which any notices or other instruments affecting the
    company under this Act may be served or delivered.

(1.) Such person shall be called the "Public
Officer" of the company for the purposes of this
Act, and shall be appointed as follows:-

(a.) In the case of a company having a local
Board of Directors or Managers resident in the
colony, within three months after the passing
of this Act;

(b.) In the case of a company not having such
local Board as aforesaid, within six months after
the passing of this Act.

The office of Public Officer shall be kept con-
stantly filled by the making of fresh appoint-
ments thereto from time to time as may be
necessary.

(2.) Every new company shall, within three
months after it shall commence or enter into busi-
ness after the passing of this Act, appoint a Public
Officer, and name a place for delivery of notices as
aforesaid.

(3.) Every company failing or neglecting, within
the time hereinbefore limited in that behalf, to ap-
point a Public Officer, or name a place at which
notices or other instruments may be served or de-
livered as aforesaid, shall be liable to a penalty not
exceeding fifty pounds a day for every day after the
time aforesaid during which such neglect shall con-
tinue.

branch of the North Canterbury District of
the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Odd
Fellows Friendly Society, under "The Friendly So-
cieties Act, 1877," this 16th day of January, 1880.
