Zymotic Diseases. The mortality from these diseases fell to 25 in May, a decrease of 15 on the deaths from these
diseases in April. Deaths from typhoid fever decreased from 12 to 5, and those from dysentery and diarrhœa from 21 to 10.
Of these 10 deaths in May, 3 were of infants under 1 year.
Constitutional Diseases caused 13 deaths in May, against 18 in April. Of these, the deaths from cancer were 2 in May and

Local Diseases.—There was in May a considerable increase in the number of deaths in this class as against the number in
the preceding month; but the deaths in April had been fewer than in the previous months. The deaths in May were 36,
against 26 in April. The increase was spread over most of the various orders of this class.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal Zymotic
diseases of the Miasmatic order, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death
have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which
give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary
condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
