Importation of Vines into the Colony of the Cape

THE following letter and its enclosure, received
from the Colonial Secretary's Office, Cape of
Good Hope, is published for general information.

SIR, I am directed to transmit, for your information,
and, should your Government see fit, for publication
in the Gazette, the accompanying copy of a Proclama-
tion by His Excellency Sir Bartle Frere, prohibiting
the importation of vines, roots, cuttings, &c., from
any place beyond the limits of the Colony of the
Cape of Good Hope.

PROCLAMATION

By His Excellency the Right Honorable Sir HENRY
BARTLE EDWARD FRERE, Baronet, a Member of
Her Majesty's Most Honorable Privy Council,
Knight Grand Cross of the Most Honorable Order
of the Bath, Knight Grand Commander of the
Most Exalted Order of the Star of India, Gover-
nor and Commander-in-Chief of Her Majesty's
Colony of the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa,
and of the Territories and Dependencies thereof,
and Her Majesty's High Commissioner, &c.

WHEREAS by Act No. 9 of 1876, entitled "Act
to prevent the Introduction into this Colony of
Articles or Things which, by reason of Disease or
otherwise, might be injurious to the Interests
thereof," it is provided that it shall be lawful for the
Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council,
by Proclamation, to be published in the Government
Gazette, either to prohibit absolutely the introduc-
tion into this colony of any such articles or things,
or to make such regulations concerning the introduc-
tion thereof, as may be deemed expedient: And
whereas it is necessary in the interests of the colony
to prevent the importation of all grapes, vines, or
cuttings, or portions of vines, plants, tubers, roots,
bulbs, or any portion or portions thereof respectively,
from places where disease affecting vines exists or is
supposed to exist, or from which it may be
introduced:

Now, therefore, I, the Governor aforesaid, in
virtue of the powers vested in me by the said Act,
No. 9 of 1876, do, with the advice of the Executive
Council, absolutely prohibit the introduction into
this colony of all grapes, vines, or cuttings, or por-
tions of vines, plants, tubers, roots, bulbs, or any

portion or portions thereof respectively, from any
places beyond the limits of the said colony whatso-
ever.

Letters of Naturalization issued.

issue Letters of Naturalization under "The
Aliens Act, 1866," in favour of the under-mentioned
persons, viz.:-

Additions, &c., to Offices at which Electoral Rolls
can be inspected.

IN accordance with the provisions of "The Regis-
tration of Electors Act, 1879," I hereby make
the following alterations and additions to the offices
at which the electoral rolls of the under-mentioned
electoral districts shall be open for inspection:-

Rodney Electoral District,-
The Co-operative Store, Warkworth, to be an
additional office.

Wairarapa Electoral District,-
The Courthouses at Greytown and Carterton
to be abolished, and
The Police Stations at Greytown and Carterton
to be appointed offices in lieu thereof.
