Mongonui. Fine warm weather, with light variable winds, strong on 1st and 2nd from S.W.; thunder on 2nd; maximum rainfall
recorded on 14th, 60 in.
Auckland. Generally fine and clear; winds mostly light and warm; stormy, however, on 1st, 4th, and 5th, from W. and S.W.; thunder
on 2nd, also hail; maximum rain registered on 22nd, 435 in.
Taranaki. Showery at commencement and middle of month, but otherwise very fine; strong S.W. wind on 1st and 4th, but generally
moderate, and prevailed from N.E. and S.W.; maximum rain recorded on 22nd, 53 in.
Napier-Very fine; greatest rain on 14th, 47 in.; prevailing N.E. wind, and moderate; stormy on 5th and 6th, from S.E.; hail on 5th
and 6th.
Wellington. Stormy and wet up to 7th, chiefly from S.E. and S.W.; 60 in. rain recorded on 5th, the maximum for month; hail on 4th
and 5th, and snow on 5th; fine from 8th to 13th, wind N.W., and strong on 10th and 11th; stormy on 14th and 15th from S.E.,
and wet; tolerably fine to 19th, though strong N.W. wind on 18th; showery next two days, and then fine bright summer weather to
end of month; prevailing wind for month from N.W.
Nelson.-Very heavy rain during the month, but intervals of fine bright weather; maximum rainfall on 13th, 1-27 in.; thunder on 2nd;
prevailing N.E. wind, and strong on 11th, 13th, 14th, 30th, and 31st, otherwise moderate.
Cape Campbell.-Fine dry weather, with strong wind from N.W. and S.E,; gales on eight days; four days of fog; maximum rain on 5th,
45 in.
Christchurch.-Very fine; a few dull mornings, with light showers; on night of 4th strong S.W. gale, with rain, snow, and hail; maximum
rain recorded on 5th, 36 in.; prevailing N.E., E., and S.W. winds.
Bealey. Fine weather; very small rainfall, the maximum occurring on 4th, 630 in.; N.W. gales on five days, from which quarter wind
prevailed; snow on 1st and 5th; fog on 16th, 19th, and 20th.
Hokitika. Showery, with short intervals of fine weather; rain below the average, maximum fall recorded on 14th, 1.93 in.; wind pre-
vailed from S.W. and W., and stormy on four days, otherwise moderate; hail on 3rd; thunder on 1st.
Dunedin. Very showery weather generally, but some pleasant, bright days; prevailing N.E. wind; stormy from S.W. on 4th; wind on
the whole moderate; fog on 27th; hail on 4th; maximum rain recorded on 14th, 840 in.
Queenstown. Changeable weather; cold at commencement, but finer and warm until the end, when cold rain set in, with snow on hills;
snow on six days; fog on 19th and 27th; maximum rain recorded on 14th, 27 in.; thunder on 28th; prevailing wind, N.W., and
moderate.
Southland. Wet, stormy weather from S.W., from 1st to 4th; remainder of month fine and dry, with excessive heat at times; hail on
4th; maximum rain recorded on 1st, 43 in.; prevailing W. winds, and moderate.
Chatham Islands. Showery and unpleasant at commencement of month, with strong S.W. winds, but otherwise generally fine, with an
occasional light shower; maxi maximum rain recorded on 4th, 32 in.; prevailing N.W. and S.W. winds.
GENERAL REMARKS.-Fine pleasant weather experienced at most of the stations; rainfall about the average; winds variable, and
generally moderate. Earthquake occurred on the 30th, at New Plymouth, at 2.30 a.m.; at Napier, at 2.15 a.m., slight; at Palmerston
North and Foxton, at 2.25 a.m., sharp; at Wellington, at 2.25 a.m, sharp; at Wanganui, at 2.25 a.m., smart; at Masterton, at 2.30 a.m.,
smart; and at Cape Campbell, at 2.30 a.m., slight.

NOTES FOR NOVEMBER, 1879.
Mongonui. Generally unpleasant, dull weather; prevailing N.W. wind, and moderate, except on 22nd, 23rd, and 27th, when it blew
strongly from that quarter; thunder on 3rd, 4th, 27th, and 29th; fog on 27th; maximum rain recorded on 21st, 44 in.
Auckland. Showery, squally weather; winds variable, strong on 5th from S.W., and on 17th and 18th from N.E.; thunder on night of
22nd, 27th, and 28th; greatest rain recorded on 28th, 1.03 in.
Taranaki. Wet month, greatest rainfall registered on 11th, 1.34 in.; winds prevailed from N.E., S. W., and N.W.; stormy on seven days;
thunder on 21st, 26th, and 28th.
Napier.-Remarkably wet for time of year; maximum rainfall recorded on 20th, 2-20 in.; thunder on 2nd, 3rd, and 24th; thick fog on
22nd and 23rd; wind prevailed from N.E., and occasionally high.
Wellington. Fine up to 8th, wind chiefly N. W.; from 9th to 15th showery and cold, at times bright, wind S.E., and stormy on 9th and
10th from N.W., hail on 14th; from 16th to 22nd generally pleasant, though cool and showery on 19th and 20th; on night of 22nd
heavy rain from S.E., and very wet on 23rd, but mild, although from S.E.; remainder of month wet and squally from N.W.; thunder
on 26th and 28th, and hail on 25th and 28th; wind changed on 29th to S.E., and brought still heavier rain, 2.15 in. recorded on 30th,
the maximum for the month; prevailing S.E. and N. W. winds.
Nelson.-First half of month generally fine, with N. and N.W. winds, from which quarter it prevailed; stormy from N.W. on 3rd and 8th,
and from N.E. on 25th, and S.W. on 26th very squally; thunder on 2nd; maximum rain on 27th, 257 in.; latter part very showery
and unpleasant.
Cape Campbell.--Fine up to 11th, then showery to end of month, with a few fine days; prevailing N.W. wind, and gales on seven days;
thunder on 30th; fog on 24th; maximum rain on 23rd, 1.75 in.
Christchurch. First ten days very fine; on night of 11th heavy rain from S.W., the four following days being dull and showery; the
remainder of month was, with the exception of a few days, also showery and unpleasant; the maximum rain recorded on 12th and
23rd, 24 in.; thunder on 28th; hail on 30th; prevailing N.E., E., and S.W. winds, and moderate.
Bealey. Wet and showery, with occasional fine bright days; greatest rainfall recorded on 29th, 1.550 in.; N.W. gales on five days;
prevailing winds from N. and N.W.; thunder on 26th and 28th; snow on 11th; fog on 12th, 21st, and 23rd.
Hokitika. Very heavy rain recorded on 10th, 2-24 in., the maximum for month; otherwise the early part was generally fine, but latter
very wet and stormy; prevailing S.W. winds; thunder on 27th and 28th; hail on 10th.
Dunedin. Generally showery weather, especially from 23rd to 30th; fogs prevailed from 23rd to 28th; prevailing wind from N.E., and
moderate; hail on 30th; maximum rain recorded on 25th, 1.000 in.
Queenstown. Weather changeable at times warm, then cold and wintry; maximum rain recorded on 29th, 55 in.; prevailing N.W.
winds, and stormy on 9th; snow fell on hills on six days; fog on three days.
Southland. Beginning and end of month showery, middle rather fine; prevailing S.W. and W. winds, and stormy on five days; hail on
7th; maximum rain recorded on 29th, 82 in.
Chatham Islands. Rather fine up to the 11th; from then to end of month showery, dull, and unpleasant; maximum rain recorded on
11th, 30 in.; prevailing S. W. and N.W. winds, and at times strong; hail on 15th; fog on 11th.
GENERAL REMARKS.-Very wet, unpleasant weather; stormy, chiefly from N.W., with frequent thunder. Earthquakes on 17th, at
New Plymouth, at 6 a.m.; at Wellington, at 6.10 a.m., slight; at Christchurch, at 12.15 p.m, sharp; at New Plymouth, on 19th, at
6.10 a.m.; and on 25th, at Queenstown, at 2.20 p.m., slight.
NOTES FOR DECEMBER, 1879.
Mongonui. Early part fine, latter wet and stormy; prevailing wind N.W.; stormy on eight days; maximum rain recorded on 18th
1.60 in.; fog on 23rd and 24th.
Auckland.--Generally fine up to 13th, wind light N. and N.E.; from 14th to 27th wet and stormy, very unsettled, winds variable; fron
28th bright and warm; thunder, with hail, on 16th, also loud thunder on 20th; maximum rain recorded on 14th, 1·285 in.; stormy
on 14th, 16th, and 17th, from N.W.; also from 19th to 21st, N. and W.
Taranaki. Generally very wet, stormy weather, with prevailing N.E. and N.W. winds; very strong winds from 20th to 23rd; thunder
on 21st; hail on 21st, large; maximum rainfall recorded on 20th, 2.54 in.; an occasional fiue day.
Napier. Fine up to 12th; from 13th to 21st showery; fine again until 25th, when it rained heavily at night, and wet next two days;
last three days fine; prevailing N.E. winds, and moderate; from 21st to 24th stormy from N.W.; thunder on 15th; maximum rain
recorded on 26th, 93 in.
Wellington.-Wet, squally weather almost throughout; prevailing N.W. wind, and frequently stormy from that quarter; heavy rain on
night of 19th, 1-30 in. recorded on 20th; also heavy rain on 20th, 80 of an inch falling in two hours, and 1.40 in. recorded on 21st,
the maximum for month. A few pleasant days occurred.
