Nelson. Fine to 5th, then showery to 10th, followed by fine bright weather to 20th; remainder of month wet, dull, and un-
pleasant; 2.87 inches recorded on 21st; prevailing N.E. wind, and strong on 22nd, otherwise light; thunder on 21st and
22nd; fog on 23rd.

Cape Campbell. Fine weather, slight showers; prevailing N.W. and S.E. winds, and stormy on ten days; fog on 9th and 27th;
maximum rain recorded on 23rd, 250 in.

Christchurch. Very seasonable weather; light showers at night, with a few frosty mornings; maximum rain recorded on 23rd,
'49 in.; prevailing N.E., E., and S.W. winds, and moderate.

Bealey. Wet early and latter part, remainder very fine; maximum rain on 30th, 1.250 in.; prevailing N.W. winds and gales
on five days; snow two days; fog three days.

Hokitika. Very showery at beginning and end of month, maximum fall recorded on 30th, 2.02 in.; winds variable and often
strong; thunder on 28th and 30th.

Dunedin. Very changeable and showery, except from 11th to 19th, when it was fine; maximum rain recorded on 22nd,
1.620 in.; prevailing N.E. wind, and often calm.

Queenstown. Generally fine, but rather dull; light winds from N.W. and W.; strong S.W. wind on 9th; snow on hills on 9th
and 21st; fog on 8th, 9th, and 29th; maximum rain recorded on 22nd, 94 in.

Southland. Dry month with high barometer; severe frosts on nights of 11th, 12th, and 13th; strong wind on 5th, 14th, and
15th from N.W.; hail on 5th; maximum rain recorded on 22nd, 83 in.; wind prevailed from W. and N.W.

Waitangi, Chathams. Very pleasant weather, with little rain, mostly towards end of month; maximum fall recorded on 10th,
'61 in.; prevailing N.W. and S.W. winds, and often stormy.

GENERAL REMARKS. At many of the stations the rain was in excess, but on the whole the fall was about the average. The
weather was generally fine; at times strong winds occurred, chiefly from westward, but no severe gales. Earthquake at Taranaki
on 17th, at 8.15 a.m., and at Bealey on 23rd, at 4.4 a.m., sharp.
