NOTES FOR JULY, 1879.
Mongonui. A wet month, but rain falling principally during nights; some fine days; the maximum rain recorded on 28th, 1.98 in.;
prevailing S.W. and W. winds, and strong on 8th, 9th, and 20th; thunder on 5th, 8th, 9th, and 12th; hail on 5th and 9th; fog
on 6th.
Auckland. Showery generally, and cool, especially after nightfall; wind moderate, chiefly S.W. to N.W., stormy on 20th from S.W.;
maximum rain recorded on 23rd 575 in.; foggy on six days, very dense on 7th; thunder on 10th and 20th; hail on four days.
Taranaki. Showery weather; greatest rain recorded on 8th, 1'12 in.; prevailing S.E. wind, and strong on 20th and 27th from that
quarter; thunder on 3rd.
Napier. Wet weather, especially in early and latter part; greatest rain recorded on 1st and 23rd, 78 in.; prevailing S.W. wind, and
strong on 20th and 21st; fog on 7th; frequent calms; pleasant days in middle of month.
Wanganui. Very showery unpleasant weather; maximum rain on 2nd, 75 in.; prevailing southerly and westerly winds, strong on 10th,
20th, and 25th.
Wellington. Up to 11th, showery, some heavy falls; wind S.E. and N.W.; on night of 11th changed to S.W. and heavy rain, 2-15 in.
recorded on 12th, the maximum for the month, strong wind and cold, snow on hills; fine and bright from 12th to 17th, showery on
18th, 19th and 20th, heavy rain during night of 19th, 96 in. recorded on 20th; generally fine, bright, and cold for remainder of
month, with some frosty nights, except last few days when it was showery and dull; vivid lightning and loud peal of thunder on 9th;
fog on 27th and 28th.
Nelson. Tolerably fair weather, rain below average, maximum fall on 9th, 1:50 in.; prevailing S.E. and S.W. winds; stormy on 9th
from N.E., and on 20th and 21st from S.W.; thunder on 20th.
Cape Campbell.-
Christchurch. Showery weather, but not heavy rain, the maximum registered on 1st and 21st, 47 in.; prevailing S.W. wind, and
moderate, except on the 20th when it blew hard; snow on 11th, 19th, and 20th, 4 inches deep, very cold at times.
Bealey.-
Hokitika. Fine at commencement and latter end of month, but very wet in middle; maximum rainfall recorded on 8th, 3.30 in.:
prevailing E., S.E., and S. W. winds, and strong on eighteen days; thunder on five days, hail on five days, some severe weather.
Dunedin. Generally unpleasant squally weather from S.W., but small total rainfall; strong S.W. wind on 12th; snow on 4th; maximum
rain recorded on 29th, 360 in.
Queenstown. Very cold during the month, some severe frosts occurred, heavy snow storms on 10th, 11th, 19th, and 20th; maximum rain
recorded on 10th, 54 in.
Southland. Very cold mouth; snow on 12th, 20th, and 26th; thunder on 25th; showery, but small total rainfall; the maximum
recorded on 19th, 47 in.; wind changeable and moderate, except on 12th, 13th, 20th, 24th, and 25th, when it was strong from S.W.;
hail on 20th.
Waitangi, Chathams. Showery weather with prevailing S.W. wind, and strong on 14th, 15th, and 16th; maximum rain recorded on 2nd,
1.07 in.
GENERAL REMARKS. Rather colder and more severe than usual for this month, a good deal of snow and frost in the South, and
squally from S.W.; very showery, but the total rain about the average. Earthquake at Wellington on 27th, at 6.15 a.m., slight; at
Christchurch on 22nd, at 10.50 p.m., sharp; at Queenstown on 9th, at 2.35 p.m., slight; at Wanganui on 21st, at 10.40 p.m., slight.
NOTES FOR AUGUST, 1879.
Mongonui. Rather showery up to middle, but remainder of month fine; maximum rainfall recorded on 5th, 1.15 in.; wind variable,
strong on 3rd, 4th, and 5th from N.E., and on 10th and 14th from N.W.; thunder on 15th.
Auckland.-Cool, but pleasant; showery in middle of month, very fine at close; wind moderate, chiefly from S. to W.; maximum rain
recorded on 14th, 84 in.; strong wind on 11th from N.E. and N. to W.; thunder on 27th; hail on 27th; fog on 23rd.
Taranaki. Fine weather on the whole; winds prevailed from S.E.; stormy on 5th, 11th, and 13th from N., on 19th from W., and on
27th from S.E.; showery during the middle of month, the maximum fall recorded on 5th, 1Β·57 in.
Napier. Rather showery weather with some fine bright days at intervals; maximum rainfall recorded on 14th, '76 in.; prevailing S. and
S.W. winds, but moderate; thick fog morning of 13th.
Wanganui.-Generally fine; showery middle of month, 1.06 in. rain recorded on 13th, maximum for month; winds variable and
moderate; stormy on 5th from N.E., frequent calms.
Wellington.-Frequent rain with short intervals of fine weather, finer towards end of month, with remarkably high barometer; greatest
rain recorded on 12th and 19th, 1.200 in.; prevailing N.W. and S.E. winds, and strong from former quarter on 4th, 11th, and
18th, otherwise moderate; very cold from S.E. at times; thunder on 18th and 20th; hail on 20th; fog on 5th and 6th.
Nelson. Unusually heavy rain at commencement and middle of month, 2.57 inches being the maximum fall on the 5th; prevailing S.E.
wind, and stormy on 5th and 11th; thunder on 19th.
Cape Campbell.-Fine early part, with moderate winds; middle of month showery and strong S.E. winds, from which quarter it prevailed;
maximum rain on 19th, 25 in.
Christchurch. Generally fine with occasional frosty mornings; rather dull in early part and fine later, with very high barometer; maxi-
mum rain recorded on 13th, 30 in.; prevailing S.W. winds and strong only on 13th.
Bealey. Showery, with intervals of fine bright days; maximum rain on 19th, 1860 in.; gale from N.W. on 18th; prevailing N.W.
winds but light; snow on five days; fog on two days.
Hokitika. Generally showery up to 21st, then fine and clear to end; maximum rain recorded on 12th, 2.55 in.; prevailing easterly and
S.W. winds, and stormy from the former quarter on 4th, 11th, and 13th, and on 19th and 20th from latter; thunder on 18th; hail
on 18th; fog on four days.
Dunedin. Fine beginning and end of month, otherwise changeable; maximum rain recorded on 12th, 1.50 in.; strong wind on 7th from
W.; winds variable and frequent calms; hail on 20th; fog on 5th and 11th.
Queenstown. Fine weather prevailed; very small rainfall, the maximum recorded on 21st, 12 in.; snow on hills on 14th, 15th, 20th, and
22nd; fog on 5th, 11th, and 12th; prevailing N. W. wind and moderate.
Southland. A fine, dry, calm month, very high barometer readings at end; strong winds on 21st from S.W., and 24th S.E.; hail'on 21st;
winds variable and moderate; maximum rain recorded on 12th, 87 in.
Waitangi, Chathams. Generally showery with prevailing southerly winds, but moderate, except on 21st, which was stormy; maximum
rain registered on 15th, 1.31 in.
GENERAL REMARKS.-Fine weather throughout for time of year with moderate winds, the latter part of month very fine, with high
barometer readings at all stations, reaching 30-790 inches. Earthquakes felt at Wellington on 5th, at 7.45 a.m., smart with noise; on
the 8th, at noon, slight; and on 18th, at 3.30 p.m., very slight.
NOTES FOR SEPTEMBER, 1879.
Mongonui. Squally and showery generally, though fine at times; maximum rain on 22nd, 1.00 in.; prevailing N.E. and W. winds, and
frequently stormy.
Auckland. Fine and pleasant from 1st to 20th, with little rain and high barometer; stormy and showery at end of month, and cooler;
thunder on 29th and 30th; dense fog on 4th; gale from N.E., commencing on 21st, with lulls, to end of month; wind prevailed from
this quarter; maximum rain recorded on 22nd, 700 in.
Taranaki. Showery early part, fine in middle, and showery and squally from 20th to end of month; maximum rain recorded on 26th,
2-04 in.; prevailing N.E. wind; stormy on 22nd from N.E., on 26th from N.W., and on 27th and 30th from S.W.; thunder on
nights of 28th and 30th.
Napier. Generally fine; maximum rainfall on 5th, 23 in.; winds moderate and prevailing from N.E.; strong from N.W. on 30th.
Wanganui.-
Wellington. First two days fine and bright, then showery up to 11th, though pleasant at times; fine from 12th and 20th, remainder of
month very wet; maximum rain recorded on 27th, 2-100 in.; almost constant N.W. wind, and stormy on six days from that quarter,
and on two days from S.E.; loud peal of thunder and vivid lightning on night of 29th, with squall of hail and rain.;
