During the "Foxhound's" stay the current set
W.S.W. from one to two knots per hour; the rise of
tide was observed to be about 7 feet, one high and
one low water occurring in the twenty-four hours.
The bearings are magnetic. Variation 14° easterly
in 1880.

Notice to Mariners.—No. 52 of 1880.
LIGHT ON END OF BREAKWATER, TIMARU, EAST
COAST OF MIDDLE ISLAND.

Wellington, 14th December, 1880.
NOTICE is hereby given that, from and after the
1st January next, the Timaru Harbour Board
will exhibit two red lights from the end of the break-
water at that place. These lights will be about 10
feet apart and 18 feet above high-water mark, and
will be visible all round seaward at a distance of
about four miles in clear weather.

Alterations and Additions to the Rates for the Con-
veyance, Delivery, and Storage of Goods, Parcels,
&c., on the New Zealand Railways.
IN accordance with the By-laws for the New Zea-
land Railways, fixed by Order in Council dated
the 17th December, 1878, the following alterations
and additions to the rates for the conveyance,
delivery, and storage of goods, parcels, &c., on all the
New Zealand Railways, are hereby declared to be
fixed and to come into force from the 20th December,
1880:—
PART III.—GOODS.
Tiles (native), baked earthenware drain, to be
Class P.
Pipes, stoneware drain, to be Class N.
Clay, native, fire, and other, and coal dross, will be
charged 1s. 9d. per ton for distances of nine miles
and under.
PART IV.—LOCAL RATES.
DUNEDIN AND PORT CHALMERS.
For the purpose of charging for the conveyance of
passengers and all goods and parcels between Dunedin
and Glendermid, the distance shall be deemed to be
seven miles.
STIRLING—BALCLUTHA.
The special rate for horses, cattle, sheep, &c., is
hereby cancelled.

INVERCARGILL SECTION.
Class K.—Timber.
Native timber consigned from saw-mills to Inver-
cargill will be charged 2d. per hundred superficial
feet less than the classified rates.
PART VIII.—WHARVES.
PICTON WHARF.
Twopence per hundred superficial feet will be
charged for timber trucked from carts on to the Rail-
way Wharf or passed over the wharf for shipment.
