NOTE. Altitude of Bealey, 2,104 feet; Queenstown, 1,070 feet. The stations marked thus * are furnished with aneroid barometers only.

NOTES FOR SEPTEMBER, 1880.

Mongonui. Fine pleasant weather with moderate rain, the maximum fall recorded on 30th, 850 in.; prevailing N.W. wind, and strong
on 19th, otherwise moderate.

Auckland.-Fine and warm beginning of month with high barometer, wet towards end, the maximum rainfall recorded on 30th,
1'180 in.; wind generally light and variable; gales on 19th N.E. to N., on 21st S.W., 30th N.E. to N.; fogs on 11th and 13th.

New Plymouth. Tolerably fine weather; greatest rain recorded on 19th, 83 in.; prevailing S.W. and W. winds and moderate.

Napier. Very fine; maximum rain on 5th, 37 in.; wind prevailed from N.E. and moderate; strong S. wind on 9th, and on 26th and
27th from N.W.

Wanganui. Remarkably fine; occasional heavy showers of rain of short duration, the maximum fall on 20th, 366 in.; N. and W.
winds prevailed, and strong from that quarter on six days; thunder on 30th; fog on 5th and 7th.

Wellington. Fine generally up to 8th from S.E. and cool; strong S.E. wind on 8th; fine on 9th; from 10th to 16th fine but stormy and
disagreeable from N.W.; 17th, fine; stormy on 18th from N.W., and came on rain and continued to 21st, wind changing to S.E.;
22nd to 25th stormy and unpleasant, but no rain to speak of, severe gale on night of 25th from N.W., fine then until 29th, when it
changed from S.E. to N.W. and rained heavily, 930 in. recorded on 30th, the maximum for month; prevailing N.W. wind; very
small total rainfall for time of year.

Nelson. Generally fine; showery towards latter part, 1-97 in. rain recorded on 30th; prevailing N.E. wind; squally from S.W. on 20th,
and strong wind from N.E. on 23rd, 24th, and 30th.

Cape Campbell.--Fine dry weather, prevailing N.W. wind, and on the whole moderate, except on 11th, 15th, and 26th, which days were
stormy, the wind on last date blowing a heavy gale; fog on 6th; only two days of rain, 65 in. being the maximum fall on 30th.

Christchurch. Remarkably fine, very small rainfall, the maximum on 30th, 20 in.; strong N.W. wind blew on 11th, 15th, 19th, 26th,
and 27th; otherwise wind moderate, and prevailed from N.E., E., and S.W.

Bealey.-

Hokitika. Fine up to 10th, wind N.E.; remainder of month very wet and stormy, with prevailing S.W. and W. winds, thirteen days of
strong wind; maximum rain recorded on 15th, 3.41 in.

Dunedin. Very small rainfall distributed over the month in light showers, the maximum fall being 33 in. on 30th; strong W. wind on
28th, otherwise winds light and variable.

Queenstown. Fine to 7th, when strong squalls from W. occurred for two hours, followed by slight rain; generally fine again to 18th,
when similar weather was experienced, accompanied with heavy rain at nights; showery greater part of remainder of month; maxi-
mum rain recorded on 26th, 1.26 in.; snow fell on hills on four days; stormy on 25th and 26th from N.W. with heavy rain; fog on
four days; prevailing N.W. and W. winds; thunder on 25th.

Southland. Fine early, but latter part of month showery; maximum rain recorded on 21st, 58 in.; prevailing W. and N.W. winds;
stormy from W. on 26th; thunder on 21st, 22nd, and 27th.

Chatham Islands.-

GENERAL REMARKS. Remarkably fine and pleasant weather for time of year. In every case the temperature is above the average;
the rainfall on the whole is much less than is usual for this month. Winds generally moderate.
