The following remarks apply only to the above four principal boroughs :—
The births were 269 in April, against 227 in March, an increase of 42.
The deaths in April were 128, against 132 in March, a decrease of 4.
There were 4 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards—viz., 1 male of 65 in Auckland; 1 male of 80 and 1 female of 79
in Wellington; and 1 male of 80 in Dunedin.
Zymotic diseases caused 51 deaths in April, against 48 in March. There was a decrease in the number of these deaths in
Auckland and Wellington, but an increase in Christchurch and Dunedin.
Constitutional diseases caused 17 deaths in April, against 26 in March.
Local diseases caused 38 deaths in March, and 42 in April.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal Zymotic
diseases of the Miasmatic order, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death
have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which
give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary
condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
