The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases.
POPULATION.—In the cases marked thus * the numbers given are for the 3rd March, 1878, according to the census then
taken; in the other cases the numbers have been estimated for the 1st January, 1879.
It has been considered desirable this month to remodel the form of the monthly report, in order to comply with urgent
requests, by giving information as to the number of births and deaths in some other boroughs than those mentioned in the for-
mer reports. This information has, therefore, been given in the case of all boroughs, except Sydenham, having a population of
3,000 and over; Hokitika being included, as it was mentioned in former reports. The information has not been obtainable for
Sydenham on account of the want of local information as to the boundaries of that borough, and the impossibility therefore of
ascertaining whether certain births and deaths occurred within or outside that borough. As a consequence of the altered form,
the actual causes of death are only given for large boroughs having a population of over 10,000, and the separate causes can be
shown for each of these boroughs, rendering this part of the report more valuable than when the causes for several boroughs were
grouped together.
Of the above deaths, males contributed 120; females, 69. 91 of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being
48.14 per cent. of the whole number; 64 of these were of children under one year of age.
THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 years of age and 5 years and
upwards, and the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each cause in the Boroughs of Auckland, Wellington, Christ-
church, and Dunedin that were registered, during the Month of April, 1879.
