NOTES FOR DECEMBER, 1878.

Mongonui.—On the whole, fine but very hot; showery early part, and towards end of month; maximum rainfall recorded on 26th, 1.250 in.;
prevailing N.W. and W. winds, strong on 1st and 2nd; distant thunder on 7th. On this date a severe thunder-storm with heavy rain
occurred at Pukepoto, about twenty miles S.W., causing floods and considerable damage; the day was fine at Mongonui.

Auckland.—Generally fine, little rain; the maximum registered on 8th, 575 in.; very warm and dry from 9th to 25th; winds moderate
and prevailed from S.W., W., and N.W.; thunder on 9th; fog on 3rd.

Taranaki.—Slight showers up to 8th, but otherwise very dry, with prevailing N. and N.W. winds; stormy on 29th and 31st from S.W.;
maximum rain recorded on 8th, 550 in.; thunder on 7th and 8th; fog on 2nd.

Napier.—Slight rain first few days, but remainder remarkably dry and warm; maximum rain recorded on 8th, 08 in.; prevailing winds
N.E., and generally moderate until end of month, when a few days of strong westerly winds occurred.

Wanganui.—Showery during early part and at end of month; during middle period very fine; at times very warm and sultry; maximum
rain recorded on 8th, 66 in.; prevailing N.W. winds, and strong the last few days; thunder on 6th and 7th.

Wellington.—Dull, close, unpleasant, showery weather up to 7th; wind from N.E. and N.W., and strong on 4th; the maximum rain
recorded on 8th, 1.45 in.; very fine bright N.W. weather from 8th to 17th; slight rain next three days, then fine up to 25th; from
26th to 29th, very stormy from N. W. with slight rain; fine last two days; thunder and vivid lightning on 7th.

Nelson.—Showery in beginning and end, but generally very fine and dry weather; maximum rain recorded on 29th, 1.260 in.; prevailing
S.W. and N. winds, and strong from former quarter on 9th, 11th, 13th, and 29th.

Cape Campbell.—Very slight rain, maximum rain recorded on 1st, 32 in.; prevailing N.W. winds and gales for thirteen days; fog on
19th and 26th.

Christchurch.—Remarkable for hot winds and small rain-fall; on 7th, 18th, and 24th, light showers; on 8th, severe thunder-storm with
hail and rain; wind W., very loud thunder; great heat experienced at times; from 26th to end of month strong hot N.W. winds,
causing snow-rivers to overflow, damaging bridges and crops; prevailing winds N.E., S.W., and N.W.; maximum rain recorded on
31st, 26 in.

Bealey.—Wet and showery throughout; rain fell on twenty-three days; the maximum rain registered on 27th, 4.100 in.; thunder-storms
on 5th, 27th, and 28th; gales on 27th and 28th from N.W., from which quarter and from N.E. winds prevailed.

Hokitika.—Very wet, stormy, unpleasant month, with frequent gales from S.W. and W., and five days thunder; hail fell on 27th, and
fog occurred for seven days; maximum rain recorded on 24th, 3.09 in., also 2:38 in. on 27th, and 2.20 in. on 29th, besides other
heavy falls.

Dunedin.—A few fine days, but generally showery, warm weather; maximum rain recorded on 3rd, 830 in.; thunder on 12th; fog on
2nd and 7th; winds moderate and prevailing from N.E.

Queenstown.—Weather changeable; some warm, fine days at beginning, with occasional showers; end of month windy weather
set in; snow fell on hills from 27th to 30th, during which unusual rain fell on the low country; maximum rain recorded on 27th,
1.57 in.; thunder on 23rd; seven days of fog.

Southland.—A cold, windy, and wet month; winds prevailed from S.W.; maximum rain recorded on 2nd, 1.50 in.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Generally fine, dry, warm weather at northern stations, but in the south excessive rain and frequently stormy cold weather
experienced for time of year. Earthquakes felt at Wellington on 6th, at 9 p.m., slight; on 7th, at 5 a.m., slight; on 12th, at 11.39 a.m.,
slight, followed by a smarter shock. Meteors observed in north on 15th, and in south on 20th and 25th.
