THE following Notice to Mariners, received from
the Marine Board, Sydney, is published for
general information.

NEW CHANNEL OPENED AT THE MANNING RIVER.
INFORMATION has been received from the Pilot at the
Manning River, to the effect that a new channel has
been opened, with a depth of 9 feet 6 inches in it,
to the southward of the old one, which has been
beaconed off. Vessels using the new channel will
avoid the inside crossing.

NOTICE is hereby given that Captain Carmichael,
of the schooner “Louisanna,” reports that, in
latitude 15° 56′ 30″ S., and longitude 176° 56′ W.,
he saw patches of dark water, and on taking
soundings found 15 and 17 fathoms. The reef ap-
peared to be much more shallow to the south and
south-west, as far as the eye could reach. The
bottom is coral.

GULF OF ST. VINCENT.—EDITHBURGH.
NOTICE is hereby given that, on and after the 4th day
of October, 1879, a bright white light will be ex-
hibited on the outer end of the Edithburgh Jetty,
from sunset to sunrise.

In clear weather the light will be seen at a distance
of about five miles.

WIDE BAY BAR.
WITH the square beacons in line on a W. by S.
bearing, a vessel will now cross Wide Bay Bar with
a depth of not less than 17 feet at low water.

EXHIBITION OF CROWDY HEAD LIGHT, DISCONTINU-
ANCE OF THAT AT THE MANNING RIVER HEADS.
ON and after the night of Monday, the 1st of De-
cember, the light at the Manning River Heads will
be discontinued, and that on Crowdy Head exhibited.
The latter will be eclipsed over the Mermaid Reef,
and between it and the land to the northward, but
will show a fixed white light in all other directions
to seaward, and thus be a safe guide to vessels ap-
proaching Crowdy Head.

The light is of the fourth order dioptric, and will be
visible at a range of ten or twelve miles in ordinary
weather.

PORT ALBERT.—OUTER BAR BUOY.
PILOTS, masters of vessels, and others are hereby
informed that the White Nun Buoy, placed at the
Eastern Spit entrance at the bar at Port Albert, in
5 fathoms, has broken adrift from its position.

This buoy will not be replaced.

NOTICE TO MARINERS.

RED LIGHTS ON TRAINING WALLS, WANGANUI
RIVER.
———
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 23rd December, 1879.

THE Wanganui Harbour and River Conservators’
Board have given notice that, on and after
Thursday, the 1st day of January next, a red light,
showing all round, will be placed on each of the lower
extremities of the Training Walls. The distance
across the river between the lights is 500 feet.

These lights will be moved down the river as the
works advance. They are at present situated about
half a mile above Languard Bluff.
