The following remarks apply only to the above four principal boroughs :—
The births were 259 in August, against 279 in July, a decrease of 20.
The deaths in August were 106, against 97 in July, an increase of 9.
There were 14 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards—viz., 4 males of 67, 69, 70, and 72 years, and 2 females of 67
and 72 years, at Wellington; 3 males of 65, 73, and 95, and 1 female of 67, at Christchurch; and 3 males of 68, 70, and 77, and
1 female of 85, at Dunedin.
Zymotic diseases. The deaths from Zymotic diseases, which decreased from 28 in May to 22 in June, and from 22 in
June to 15 in July, have again decreased from 15 in July to 13 in August. Typhoid fever caused 1 death in August, against 2 in
July.
Constitutional diseases.—The deaths from these diseases have increased from 13 in July to 21 in August. Of these, the
deaths from phthisis were 8 in July and 13 in August.
Local diseases.—The number of deaths from local diseases was 50 in July and 52 in August; of these, diseases of the
nervous system caused 14 deaths in July and 12 in August. Heart disease caused 7 deaths in July and 6 in August; diseases
of the respiratory organs caused 21 deaths in July and 26 in August; diseases of digestive organs caused 6 deaths in August,
against 5 in July.
Developmental Diseases.—The number of deaths from these causes was the same in both months—viz., 14 in July and 14
in August.
Violent Deaths.—The number of these deaths was 4 in August, against 5 in July. Suicide caused 1 death in August and
2 in July.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal Zymotic
diseases of the Miasmatic order, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death
have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which
give rise to sudden increases in the death-ratos of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary
condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
