PROCLAMATION BY THE WHANGAREI COUNTY
COUNCIL THAT CERTAIN LANDS ARE REQUIRED
TO BE TAKEN FOR ROAD WORKS WITHIN THE
MAUNGAKARAMEA HIGHWAY DISTRICT, WHA-
NGAREI COUNTY.
WHEREAS by "The Public Works Act, 1876,"
it is, among other things, enacted that, when-
ever it shall become necessary to take any lands for
county works, it shall be lawful to cause a survey to
be made and plans to be prepared, showing generally
the nature of the works proposed to be executed and
the lands required to be taken for the same, together
with the names of the owners and occupiers of such
lands as far as they can be ascertained, and shall
cause a copy of such plans to be deposited in some
place in the road district in which such lands are, and
such plan to be open to inspection at all reasonable
hours; and any person having custody thereof, and
refusing or obstructing such inspection, shall for
every such offence be liable to a penalty of not more
than five pounds:
And it is further enacted that it shall be gazetted
and publicly notified, stating the place where such
plans are open for inspection, with a general descrip-
tion of the works proposed to be executed and of the
lands required to be taken; and in such notice shall
call upon all persons affected to set forth in writing
any well-grounded objections to the execution of such
works or to the taking of such lands, and to send
such writing within forty days from the first publica-
tion of such notice to the County Council:
Now I, Finlayson Smith, Chairman of the Wha-
ngarei County Council, notify that a copy of such
plans are open for inspection at the residence of the
Chairinan of the Maungakaramea Highway District;
that the works proposed to be executed are the form-
ing of a road and the construction of a bridge; and
the lands required to be taken are as follows:-

And I hereby call upon all persons affected to set
forth in writing any well-grounded objection to the
execution of such works or to the taking of such
lands, and to send such writing, within forty days
from the first publication of such notice, to the
County Council.
Given under my hand, at Whangarei, this
twenty-first day of August, 1878.

I HEREBY proclaim the following roads within
the Whangarei County to be County Roads:-
Road from the Customhouse, Whangarei Heads,
to its junction with the Mill Road, in the Whangarei
Amended Highway District.
Road from Maungaturoto to Whangarei, through
Mareretu Outlying District, and through the Wai-
kiekie and Maungakaramea Highway Districts, to the
junction with the Whangarei-Wairoa Road at Maun-
gakaramea, Grahame's Flat.
Road from its junction with the Rodney County
at Bream Tail, to the Telegraph Station at Waipu.
Road from Tangiteroria, Wairoa, to the junction
with the Government Road near the Otaika River,
to be called the Whangarei and Wairoa Road.
Road from Lewis's store, Waipu, to the junction
with the Government Road near Mangapai.
Road from Whangarei Township District, through
Maunu, and on to Wharekohe.
Road from Whakapara Bridge, along W. Bedling-
ton's Survey, from Otaika to Mangapai Township.

PATENT FOR IMPROVEMENTS IN WIRE SUSPEN-
SION TRAMWAYS.
PATENT for improvements in the use and applica-
tion of wire suspension tramways for lifting,
carrying, and depositing silt, minerals, or other like
substances.
This is to notify that JOHN ALVES, Engineer, and
HENRY HOWORTH, Gentleman, both of Dunedin, in
the Provincial District of Otago, New Zealand, did,
on the 16th day of September instant, deposit at the
office of the Patent Officer, in the Colonial Secre-
tary's Office, in Wellington, a specification or instru-
ment in writing, under their hands and seals, particu-
larly describing and ascertaining the nature of the
said Invention, and in what manner the same is to be
performed; and that by reason of such deposit the
said Invention is protected and secured to them ex-
clusively for the term of six calendar months thence
next ensuing.
And I do further notify that the said John Alves
and Henry Howorth have given notice in writing at
my office of their intention to proceed with their
application for Letters Patent for the said Invention,
and that I have appointed Friday, the 14th day of
February next, at twelve o'clock noon, at my office,
to hear and consider the said application, and all
objections thereto; and I do hereby require all per-
sons having an interest in opposing the grant of such
Letters Patent, to leave, on or before the 10th day of
February next, at my office, in Wellington, particu-
lars in writing of their objections to the said applica-
tion, otherwise they will be precluded from urging
the same.
Given under my hand this sixteenth day of Sep-
tember, 1878.

PATENT FOR THE MANUFACTURE AND USE OF
PATENT ARTIFICIAL STONE.
PATENT for the manufacture and use of patent
artificial stone made from Portland cement or
other adhesive matter, washed compressed sand, and
water.
This is to notify that CHARLES HIBBERD, of Green
Island, Otago, did, on the 17th day of September
instant, deposit at the office of the Patent Officer, in
the Colonial Secretary's Office, in Wellington, a
specification or instrument in writing, under his hand
and seal, particularly describing and ascertaining the
nature of the said Invention, and in what manner the
same is to be performed; and by reason of such de-
posit the said Invention is protected and secured to
him exclusively for the term of six calendar months
thence next ensuing.
And I do further notify that the said Charles
Hibberd has given notice in writing at my office of
his intention to proceed with his application for
Letters Patent for the said Invention, and that I
have appointed Friday, the 13th day of December
next, at eleven o'clock in the forenoon, at my office,
to hear and consider the said application, and all
objections thereto; and I do hereby require all per-
sons having an interest in opposing the grant of such
Letters Patent, to leave, on or before the 9th day of
December next, at my office, in Wellington, particu-
lars in writing of their objections to the said applica-
tion, otherwise they will be precluded from urging
the same.
Given under my hand this seventeenth day of Sep-
tember, 1878.
