The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases.
The births were 51 less in number than in July.
The deaths were 8 more in number than the deaths in July.
Of the deaths, males contributed 67; females, 38: 37 of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 35.5
per cent. of the whole number; 27 of these were of children under 1 year of age.
There were 14 deaths of persons over 65 years of age: 8 of these persons were females and 6 were males; 1 male of 70, and 2
females of 85 and 100 years, died at Auckland; 1 male of 67, and 1 female of 73 years, died at Thames; 1 female of 68 years
died at Wellington; 1 female of 68 years died at Nelson; 4 males of 68, 70, 73, and 74 years, and 3 females of 66, 73, and 86
years, died at Dunedin.

THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 years of age and 5 years and upwards, and
the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each cause in the Boroughs named, and that were registered, during the Month of
August, 1878.
