such notification the discoverer shall state as nearly
as practicable the exact locality, the distance from
the nearest gold workings, and the number of persons
engaged at that date in mining for gold thereon.
2. If two or more persons simultaneously dis-
cover gold in the same locality, or in places imme-
diately adjacent, and each severally complies with
the conditions above mentioned, the sum proper to be
awarded will be divided amongst the several persons
who have discovered the gold field, in such manner as
shall be determined after due investigation by the
Secretary for Crown Lands or his appointee.
3. Rewards will only be given for discoveries made
public subsequently to the publication of this notice.
4. The words "nearest gold workings" shall mean
gold workings recognized as such, and on which
twelve miners are actually employed in searching for
gold.
5. In any proclaimed mining district the newly-dis-
covered gold field must be not less than five miles
from the nearest gold workings, but such distance
may be varied either generally or for particular
localities in any subsequent Proclamation.
6. Within eighteen months after the date of the
notification of discovery the claimant shall prove to
the satisfaction of the Minister for Lands, or his ap-
pointee, the number of persons (not being necessarily
the same persons continuously) who have been
engaged in mining with reasonable diligence on the
new field for twelve months from the date of notifica-
tion of discovery.
7. Rewards, not exceeding in the whole five thou-
sand (£5,000) pounds in each Island, will be given
on the following scale :-
A population of not less than fifty (50) persons
(not necessarily the same persons) engaged
in bona fide gold mining with reasonable dili-
gence on the new field for twelve months, £50.
A population of not less than one hundred (100)
persons (not necessarily the same persons)
engaged in bona fide gold mining with reason-
able diligence on the new field for twelve
months, £500.
A population of not less than three hundred
(300) persons (not necessarily the same per-
sons) engaged in bona fide gold mining with
reasonable diligence on the new field for
twelve months, £1,000.
8. If the gold workings for the discovery of which
reward is claimed contain auriferous deposits of an
entirely new character (such as quartz lodes in, or
in the vicinity of, alluvial workings), or existing under
previously-undeveloped conditions, rewards may be
granted in the discretion of the Government, subject
generally to these conditions, but without reference
to the condition of distance imposed thereby.
9. Chinese shall not be included in the estimate of
resident population as the basis of rewards.
CONDITIONS—NORTH ISLAND.
No prospecting to be allowed on Native land,
without the consent of the Native owners previously
obtained, and the approval of the Native Minister.
Prospectors going on Native land without consent
of the owners are liable to the penalties imposed by
the Acts relating to Gold Fields, and will forfeit all
claim to the reward.
Native owners will he entitled to rewards provided
that, if the discovery be made on their own land, they
enter into arrangements with the Government for
throwing such land open for mining purposes to the
public.
AIDS TO PROSPECTING FOR GOLD OR OTHER
PRECIOUS MINERALS.

  1. Five thousand (£5,000) pounds will be given
    to associations or local bodies in aid of prospecting
    for gold or other precious minerals, or in construct-
    tion of prospecting tracks cut solely for the purposes
    of such prospecting, by way of subsidy, cent. per
    cent. upon a wage considerably below the market
    value of labour paid per head on the number of men
    actually employed.
  2. No more than two hundred (£200) pounds shall
    be granted to any one local association or local body
    for any one prospecting expedition.
  3. No sum shall be paid in excess of such sum as
    may be calculated upon a wage of five shillings per
    day on the number of men actually engaged in any
    prospecting party.
  4. The association or local body shall be required
    to prove to the satisfaction of the Minister for Lands,
    or his appointee, the time during which prospecting
    was carried on, and the number of men from time to
    time employed.
  5. No prospecting to be allowed on Native land,
    without the consent of the Native owners previously
    obtained, and the approval of the Native Minister.

Sheep Inspector's Notice.

NOTICE has been received from the Inspector of
Sheep for the Wanganui District that he has
cancelled the clean certificate of Mr. Isaac Sargeant,
of No. 2 Line, for a separate flock of sheep of 300,
dated the 3rd instant.

Sheep Inspector's Report.

THE Inspector of Sheep for the East Coast District
reports that the sheep within
his district on which assessment has been paid for
the year ending 31st December, 1877, number
250,514, being an increase of 45,394 over last year.
The assessment paid amounts to £521 18s. 1d., being
an excess of £94 11s. 5d. over last year's receipts.
The flocks reported scabby are fewer than last year,
and he hopes to be able to report these clean shortly
