Authority to kill Male Pheasants in Taranaki.

NORMANBY, Governor.

IN pursuance of the provisions of the twenty-fourth
section of "The Protection of Animals Act,
1873," I, George Augustus Constantine, Marquis of
Normanby, the Governor of the Colony of New Zea-
land, do hereby authorize and license

ARTHUR TUKE, Esq.,

his servants or others, by his direction or permission,
to kill or destroy any male pheasants which shall be
on property situate in the Provincial District of
Taranaki; and I declare this authority shall continue
in force until the thirtieth day of April, one thousand
eight hundred and seventy-eight, unless previously
revoked.

As witness the hand of His Excellency the
Governor, this twelfth day of January,
one thousand eight hundred and seventy-
eight.

Regulations respecting the Pay of Officers in the
Armed Constabulary.

NORMANBY, Governor.

WHEREAS by the fifth section of "The Armed
Constabulary Act Amendment Act, 1869,"
it is, among other things, enacted that the Governor
may from time to time make and alter regulations
respecting the clothing, equipment, and pay of the
Armed Constabulary; and all such regulations shall
have the same force as though they formed a part of
the now reciting Act: And whereas it is expedient
to revoke certain of the existing regulations, bearing
date the twentieth day of July, one thousand eight
hundred and seventy-six:

Now, therefore, I, George Augustus Constantine,
Marquis of Normanby, the Governor of the Colony
of New Zealand, in pursuance of the powers and
authority vested in me by the hereinbefore in part
recited Act, do hereby revoke such of the Regula-
tions dated the twentieth day of July, one thousand
eight hundred and seventy-six, being that portion of
number two hundred and eighty-two as relates to the
pay of officers; and in lieu thereof do hereby make
the Regulations set forth in the Schedule hereto, and
do direct that they shall be read with and as part of
the existing Regulations.

SCHEDULE.

THE following will be the rates of pay and allowances
of the officers of the force:-
Inspector and 1st Class Superintendent Β£500

Inspectors " " 350
Sub-Inspectors ... ... 250
Surgeons ... ... ... ... 250

Given under the hand of His Excellency the
Most Honorable George Augustus Con-
stantine, Marquis of Normanby, Earl of
Mulgrave, Viscount Normanby, and Baron
Mulgrave of Mulgrave, all in the County
of York, in the Peerage of the United
Kingdom; and Baron Mulgrave of New
Ross, in the County of Wexford, in the
Peerage of Ireland; a Member of Her
Majesty's Most Honorable Privy Coun-
cil; Knight Grand Cross of the Most
Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and
Saint George; Governor and Commander
in-Chief in and over Her Majesty's Colony
of New Zealand and its Dependencies,
and Vice-Admiral of the same; at the
Government House, at Wellington, this
sixteenth day of January, in the year of
our Lord one thousand eight hundred
and seventy-eight.

Appointment of Commissioner, Armed Constabulary.

Wellington, 16th January, 1878.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased, in
the name and on behalf of Her Majesty, to
appoint

The Hon. GEORGE STODDART WHITMORE, C.M.G.,
a Member of the Executive Council, and Colonial
Secretary of the Colony of New Zealand, to be Com-
missioner of Armed Constabulary.

The said office to be held by him so long only as he
shall be and remain such Member of the Executive
Council; and to be so held and exercised without
receiving or being entitled to any salary, fees, wages,
allowance, emolument, or profit of any kind in respect
thereof.

Council and Legislative Assembly of Queens-
land is published for general information.

QUEENSLAND.
(No. 8).

AN ACT TO REGULATE THE IMMIGRATION OF CHINESE,
AND TO MAKE PROVISION AGAINST THEIR BECOMING
A CHARGE UPON THE COLONY. [Assented to 20th
August, 1877.

WHEREAS it is expedient to regulate the immigra-
tion of Chinese into the Colony of Queensland, and
to obtain security for the payment of any expenses
that may be incurred in respect of such immigrants,
and of any fines or penalties imposed upon them:
Be it therefore enacted by the Queen's Most Excel-
lent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of
the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly of
Queensland in Parliament assembled, and by the
authority of the same as follows:-

  1. For the purpose of this Act the following words
    in inverted commas shall, unless the context other-
    wise indicate, bear the meanings set against them
    respectively-

"Chinese"-Any native of the Chinese Empire
or its dependencies not born of British
parents..
"Vessel"-Any ship or other sea-going vessel
of whatsoever kind or description.
