LEWIS HENRY. BALFOUR WILSON

has been appointed Chief Clerk of the Marine De-
partment, and to take charge of the office during the
absence from Wellington of Captain Johnson.

NOTICE TO MARINERS.

EXHIBITION OF A FIXED WHITE LIGHT AT TIMARU.

Wellington, 17th June, 1878.

IT is hereby notified that, on and after the 1st day
of July next, a Harbour Light will be ex-
hibited from the Lighthouse which has been erected
at Timaru, the position and characteristics of which
are as follow:-

The Timaru Lighthouse is situated in the Town of
Timaru, on the East Coast of the Middle Island of
New Zealand, and bears from Patiti Point N.W. N.
distant 1 1/4 miles. The tower is 30 feet in height, is
built of timber, and painted stone colour. The
Light will be a Fifth Order Fixed White Light, and
will be visible from N. 20° W. round by W. to S.
20° E. The light is elevated about 85 feet above the
sea, and, allowing 15 feet for the height of the
observer's eye, will be seen at a distance of about
14 1/2 nautical miles in clear weather, and at lesser
distances according to the state of the atmosphere.

On the same night that this light is exhibited, the
Red Light at present shown at Timaru will be dis-
continued.

affects the following Admiralty Charts, viz.: General
Chart of New Zealand (No. 1212), and Sheet 9
(No. 2532).

School Commissioners appointed.

PURSUANT to section eleven of "The Education
Reserves Act, 1877," His Excellency the Gover-
nor has been pleased to appoint the under-mentioned
gentlemen to be School Commissioners for the pro-
vincial districts as follows, namely:-

For the Provincial District of Auckland.
James Dilworth, Esq.
John McEffer Shera, Esq.
Daniel Austin Tole, Esq.

For the Provincial District of Hawke's Bay.
Richmond Beetham, Esq.
Robert Stuart, Esq.
John Thomas Tylee, Esq.

£10,000 Bonus.

Crown Lands Office,
Wellington, 22nd April, 1878.

NOTICE is hereby given that, in terms of a reso-
lution of the House of Representatives, the
Government of New Zealand will pay, by way of
bonus, the sum of five thousand pounds (£5,000) to
any individual or company who shall first produce
not less than five hundred (500) tons of marketable
sugar from beet grown and manufactured in the

North Island. Also that a like sum of five thousand
pounds (£5,000) will be paid to any individual or
company who shall first produce not less than five
hundred (500) tons of marketable sugar from beet
grown and manufactured in the Middle Island.
Such bonus to be paid upon its being duly certified
by the Commissioner of Crown Lands of the district
within which the sugar shall have been produced,
and by the Chairman of the nearest Chamber of
Commerce, that the minimum quantity hereinbefore
mentioned has been so produced, and is of market-
able quality: Provided further that such certificates
shall have been presented at the Colonial Treasury
within three years of the date above written.

Money Order and Savings Bank Office will be
opened at

KOPUA (Chief Office, Napier),

from and after the 24th instant.

Auckland Mail Steam Services.

General Post Office,
Wellington, 19th June, 1878.

SEALED TENDERS will be received at this office
until noon of Saturday, the 6th of July proximo,
for the performance of any or all of the under-
mentioned Mail Steam Services, for periods of ONE
or THREE years, from the 1st day of August, 1878.

  1. Tauranga and Katikati, weekly or twice weekly.
  2. Helensville and Dargaville, twice weekly.
  3. Helensville and Matakohe, once weekly.
  4. Helensville and Port Albert, once weekly.
  5. Auckland and Warkworth, twice weekly.
  6. Auckland and Matakana, once weekly.

The services to be performed in accordance with
time-tables, to be furnished from time to time by the
Postmaster-General. Particulars of the services may
be obtained on application to the General Post Office,
or to the Chief Postmaster, Auckland, and the Post-
master, Tauranga.

Tenderers to state the names, tonnage, and horse-
power of the vessels to be employed in the service.
The lowest or any tender will not necessarily be
accepted. A deposit equal to 25 per cent. of the
annual subsidy must accompany each tender.

Tenders to be addressed to the Hon. the Post-
master-General, and indorsed "Tender for Auckland
Mail Steam Services."

to be Certificated Accountants in Bankruptcy under
"The Debtors and Creditors Act, 1876," within the
Wellington Judicial District.
