section of "The Native Land Act, 1873."

Notification of Regulations prescribing Terms and
Conditions for the Use of the Nelson Creek
Water-race and Magee's Water-race.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and
authorities vested in me by "The Public Works
Act, 1876," I, the Honorable James Macandrew,
Minister for Public Works, do hereby make the
regulations hereinafter set forth, prescribing the
terms and conditions upon which the water-races
therein mentioned may be used, and the rates and
charges to be paid for water supplied, that is to say,-

  1. The Nelson Creek Water-race and Magee's
    Water-race, and all reservoirs, dams, branch races,
    and works of any kind in connection therewith
    (hereinafter included in the expression "the races"),
    shall be under the control of an officer, to be from
    time to time appointed by the Governor, to be called
    the "Manager," who shall hold office during the
    Governor's pleasure, and may be removed or dismissed
    from his office by the Governor at any moment.

PROVINCIAL DISTRICT AUDITORS
to frank, free from the prepayment of postage, letters
and parcels posted on the public service.

  1. The Manager shall have the entire charge of
    the races, and shall be responsible for keeping the
    same in proper repair, and for maintaining the supply
    of water; and may, subject to these regulations, sell
    and supply water to miners for mining purposes, or
    for the purposes of working saw-mills or other
    machinery.
    The Manager, so long as he shall hold office, shall
    be the person to recover all rates and charges pay-
    able under these regulations, as provided in "The
    Public Works Act, 1876;" and the Manager for the
    time being shall be deemed to be duly authorized by
    the Minister for Public Works for that purpose.
  2. No person shall take water from the races, or
    run water or tailings into the same, or in any way
    interfere with any of them, without the consent of
    the Manager.
  3. Water from the races shall be sold by measure,
    the unit of measurement for the purposes of these
    regulations being taken to be what is known as a
    "sluice head," "Government head," and "head,"
    as provided in "The Mines Act, 1877," which means
    a stream of water capable of discharging sixty cubic
    feet of water per minute.

Tenders for Engraving.

SEALED TENDERS will be received at this office
until noon of Tuesday, the 25th instant, for the
execution of such engraving as may be required by
the Post Office Department, during the period from
1st July, 1878, to 30th June, 1879.
Particulars may be obtained at all Chief Post
Offices.
Tenders to be addressed to the Hon. the Postmas-
ter-General, and indorsed "Tender for Engraving."
The lowest or any tender will not necessarily be
accepted.

  1. The rates at which water shall be sold for
    mining purposes shall be as follows: For six (6)
    working days of twenty-four (24) hours each, first
    water, three pounds ten shillings (£3 10s.); second
    water, two pounds ten shillings (£2 10s.); and third
    water, one pound ten shillings (£1 10s.), for each
    sluice head.
    For six (6) working days of eight (8) hours each,
    from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., first water, two pounds (£2);
    second water, one pound ten shillings (£1 10s.);
    and third water, one pound (£1), for each sluice
    head.
    For six (6) working days of eight (8) hours each,
    from 4 p.m. to 12 midnight, first water, one pound
    ten shillings (£1 10s.); second water, one pound
    (£1); and third water, ten shillings (10s.), for each
    sluice head.
