NOTICE TO MARINERS.
No. 11 of 1878.

Wellington, 1st May, 1878.
A NEW Pilot Station is now erected on the north-
side entrance to the Manawatu River, and is
plainly visible several miles from sea. The Colonial
Tidal and Bar or Danger Signals are in use, as well
as the International Code. Two moveable beacons -
the seaward one painted red, and the landward one
black-which can be seen 2 or 3 miles, are placed,
which, kept in one, lead over the bar. At night, when
the bar is passable, a green light is shown on the red
or seaward beacon, and a red light on the black
beacon, in addition to the white light on flagstaff,
which is always shown, and may be seen in clear
weather 8 or 10 miles.

"Friendly Societies Act, 1877." - Amendments of
Rules registered.

IN terms of section 12, subsection 3, of the above
Act, it is notified that the following amend-
ments of the rules of the North Westland District,
M.U., I.O.O.F., have been duly registered:--

  1. That in Rule 2, Section 1, the words "Odd Fel-
    lows' Hotel, Princes Street, Charleston," be struck
    out, and "Masonic Hall, Westport," be inserted in
    lieu thereof.

  2. That in the amended 22nd District Rule the
    scale of clearance fees be struck out, and the following
    inserted-payable in all cases:-

"18 and not exceeding 25 years of age 0 2 6
25 " " 30 " ... 0 5 0
30 " " 35 " ... 0 10 0
35 " " 40 " ... 1 0 0"

  1. That the words "Failing this, such members
    shall show cause why such certificate is not sent," be
    struck out of the amended 38th Rule.

  2. That the following words be added to the first
    section of the 40th District Rule: "That any member
    residing abroad falling sick shall send a declaration
    on the funds of his Lodge, accompanied by a certifi-
    cate signed by a duly-qualified medical practitioner
    stating his complaint; such certificate shall be at-
    tested by the resident Consul, or other person duly
    authorized to receive declarations. Should the mem-
    ber continue sick, he shall send a similar certificate
    at least every four weeks, or no sick pay shall be al-
    lowed. The certificate shall not be either post or ante-
    dated. The payment for sickness to be calculated
    from the post-mark on the first letter containing the
    certificate, to the date of the last certificate. The
    member shall also advise the Lodge as to the trans-
    mission of sick pay; the cost thereof and all postage
    to be deducted."

  3. That the twelve months' benefits, contained in
    Rule 18, be reduced to six months' benefits in all
    cases.

Application for Registration of a Trade Mark.

NOTICE is hereby given that Mr. GEORGE TURN-
BULL, of Dunedin, Merchant (carrying on business
there under the firm or style of W. and G. Turnbull
and Co.), has applied, on behalf of Messrs. BACH AND
NOSTRAND, of 41, Fulton Street, New York, United
States of America, to register, under "The Trade
Marks Act, 1866," the Trade Mark of which the
following is a description, viz. :-

Description of Trade Mark.

Glass bottles of dark-amber colour, and flattened
sides and ends, and rounded neck. The bottles are
stoppered with cork, and capsuled with soft metallic
capsules, which are impressed upon the top with the
words, in circular form,-

"Dr. Townsend's"
"Aromatic"
"Hollands"
"Tonic."

The preparation is in liquid form, of pale-light
colour. On one of the sides of the bottle is blown
in the glass the words "Dr. Townsend's," on another
side the word "Aromatic," on another side the
words "Hollands Tonic," and on the fourth side
there is a white label on which is imprinted in black
lettering the words

"Dr. Townsend's
"Aromatic
"Hollands Tonic;"

and there is also reference made on the said
label to some of the purposes for which the said
preparation may be used, and a caution by the said
Messieurs Bach and Nostrand.

The said bottles are wrapped in paper wrappers
containing printed advertisements, directions, and
cautions, and are enclosed in a stiff-paper covering,
