boiling-down. The lambing of last year was quite
up to the average, and the clip the best I have
known. The large outlay in fending and surface-
sowing of English grasses is year by year producing
the most satisfactory results, not only in the in-
creased carrying capacity of the lands so treated,
but in the superior class of sheep now carried; for,
whilst our sheep have been doubled during the past
ten years, the export of wool has been nearly quad-
rupled; and so long as these improvements continue,
and the cutting up of large runs becomes more
general, there is no reason to apprehend any diminu-
tion in the annual increase of sheep, or export of wool
and tallow from this district. I have again the satis-
faction of reporting all the flocks still free from scab;
and although the Akitio Station is now in possession
of a clean certificate, I cannot recommend a discon-
tinuance of the maintenance of the double line of
protective fencing at the southern boundary, or
relaxation of the vigilant watch kept by the boundary
shepherd.
I have, &c.,
G. PEACOCK,
Inspector of Sheep.
The Commissioner of Crown Lands,
Napier.
