J. MACANDREW.
Sheep Inspector's Office,
Napier, 11th April, 1878.
SIR,-I have the honor to furnish my report for the
current year, and enclose for publication sheep
returns of 1st May, 1877, which show a very satis-
factory increase of 102,489 over those of the previous
year. The enclosed returns comprise 713,600 ewes,
648,246 wethers, and 14,311 rams; being a total of
1,376,157 sheep, over six months old, in the Provin-

against 671,416 ewes, 588,546 wethers, and 13,706

expect the returns of next month will reach one and
a half million sheep in this district at the present
time. Since the date of my last report no sheep
have been introduced overland to Hawke's Bay; and
with the exception of three cargoes of merino ewes,
numbering 4,089, the imports have been limited as
usual to sheep for stud purposes, and comprise, in
addition to the above, 481 long-wool rams, 222 long-
wool ewes, 254 merino rams, and 444 merino ewes;
making a total of 5,490 sheep during the past twelve
months. The exports during the same period coast-
wise and overland to neighbouring provincial dis-
tricts amount to about 78,000, and about 200,000
have been absorbed by provincial consumption and
