NOTES FOR SEPTEMBER, 1877.
Mongonui.—Fine weather, with prevailing westerly winds, and often squally; thunder on 5th and 16th; hail on 16th and fog on 26th;
maximum rainfall recorded on 23rd, 41 in.
Auckland.—Showery generally, but small total rainfall, the maximum recorded on 15th, 560 in.; strong S.W. winds early part and middle
of month, light W. and S.W. towards end; hail on 16th; fog on 30th.
Taranaki.—Showery weather; maximum rainfall recorded on 5th, 1.99 in.; prevailing S.W. winds and strong from 13th to 19th.
Napier.—Fine throughout; a few showers generally during nights, the maximum rainfall registered on 11th, 38 in.; strong wind from
S.E. on 3rd, and from S. to S.W. on 17th and 19th; prevailing S.W. wind.
Wellington.—On 1st cold wet day, wind S.W. with hail and slight thunder, very stormy at night, continued stormy from same quarter on
2nd; fine until 10th, when it rained and blew cold from S.E. and S. W., 60 in. rain recorded on 11th, the maximum for month; stormy
on 13th from N. W., increasing to a gale at night, and also stormy and wet on morning of 14th, N. W.; threatening on 16th during day,
and at 7 p.m. sudden change from N.W. to S. W., with violent squalls of rain and hail, which abated during night; fine for remainder
of month, though weather dark and threatening at times to S.E., but clearing off without rain; on night of 28th strong N.W. wind;
snow on hills across harbour on 11th; on the whole fine weather, with small rainfall for time of year.
Wanganui.—
Nelson.—Fine weather generally, with prevailing S.W. winds, frequently changing to N.W. and back to S. again, often strong; maximum
rain recorded on 6th, 59 in.
Cape Campbell.--Very dry weather, with strong W. and N.W. winds, frequent gales; maximum rain recorded on 15th, 30 in.
Christchurch.—S.W. gale on 1st and 2nd, with beating rain and hail, weather remaining unsettled until 5th, then fine to 9th; on 7th
strong N.W. wind; 10th, stormy with sleet and hail S.W.; fine from 11th to 16th when it became stormy from S.W.; from 18th to
end of month fine and settled weather; maximum rain recorded on 10th, 20 in., very small total rainfall; prevailing winds N.E.
and S.W.
*Bealey.—Showery up to 17th, with an occasional bright day; remainder of month very fine, warm, pleasant weather; greatest rainfall
recorded on 14th, 2.170 in.; thunder on 14th and 16th; snow on five days; fog on 23rd; prevailing N.E. wind, often strong.
Hokitika.—Up to 18th very showery and unpleasant weather, the maximum rain recorded on 14th, 176 in.; wind chiefly westerly and
strong on 1st, 13th, 14th, and 16th; thunder on 14th, and hail on 14th and 16th; fog on 1st; remainder of month much finer,
though heavy rain recorded on 29th, 1.23 in.; prevailing S.W. winds throughout.
Dunedin.—Weather generally fine, except from 14th to 18th, when heavy S.W. gales occurred; snow fell on 16th and 17th, a good deal on
latter date; greatest rain recorded on 10th, 58 in.; prevailing S.W. wind.
*Queenstown.—First part of month changeable; on 13th barometer fell nearly one inch, when bad weather was experienced, wind N.W.,
heavy fall of snow lasting to 14th; snow also on hills on 1st and 9th; on 17th barometer rose and fine weather prevailed to end of
month; maximum rain recorded on 14th, 95 in.; prevailing wind from westward; fog on 23rd and 24th; hail on 14th.
Southland.—From 1st to 18th wet, stormy, and cold, wind westerly; a gale on 14th from S.W. was followed by snow on 15th, hail on six
days; thunder on 8th, finer towards end of month; maximum rain recorded on 16th, 70 in.; prevailing S.W. and N.W. winds.
GENERAL REMARKS.
Very small rainfall during this month as compared with that for same period in former years; the atmospheric pressure was generally
higher, and the temperature about the average on the whole; some strong winds were experienced from westward, but generally the weather
for the time of year was fine. Earthquakes were felt at Wellington on the 15th between 8 and 9 a.m., slight; on 22nd at 4.40 p.m. two
smart shocks with rumbling noise, and on 29th at 1.50 a.m. a slight movement; also at Rakaia on 16th a shock reported.
