THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.

The total deaths in these boroughs decreased from 105 in August to 99 in July, the increase on the deaths in September,
1877, amounting to only 2; allowing for the increase in the population, this was a lower rate of mortality during last month.
Zymotic Diseases caused 10 deaths, or 1 more than in August. The proportion of the deaths from those diseases to the
total number was much less than the average.
Constitutional Diseases caused 14 deaths in September, against 22 in August. There was an absence of deaths from cancer,
that disease having been registered as a cause of death in every month since January, 1877. The deaths from Pthisis and
Hydrocephalus were rather less in number than in the previous month.
Local Diseases caused 52 deaths in September, against 55 in August. Of these, diseases of the Organs of Circulation caused
11 deaths in September, against 3 in August, the number in September having been exceptionally large.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the two months at each town from six principal Zymotic diseases of the
Miasmatic order, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been
distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong, as being the most important special diseases which give rise
to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and
climatic influence of the season on health.
