THE following hydrographic information relative to
parts of the Australian Station is promulgated for
general information and guidance.

INFORMATION RECEIVED FROM MR. WM. POWELL.
There is a dangerous reef lying in China Straits, not
marked by Captain Moresby, Paplis Island bearing
S.S.W. 1 miles, Didymus Island (centre) S.E. S.
2 miles, covered at low water, and seldom breaks.
INFORMATION RECEIVED FROM THE COMMANDER-IN-
CHIEF OF THE CHINA STATION.
Mr. G. H. Harrington, master of the British
barque "Pacific Slope," reports that, after passing
through Bouganville Straits, on the 2nd March,
1878, he experienced a S.S.E. set of 110 miles in one
night, which, as a very uneasy motion had been felt
on board, and in the morning the ship was found to
be surrounded and embedded in enormous quantities
of pumice of various sizes, he attributed to the effect
of submarine volcanic disturbance.
INFORMATION RECEIVED FROM THE COMMANDING
OFFICER OF H.M.S. "SAPPHO."
The "Sappho" searched between the 26th of June
and 2nd of July, 1878, for the Lucius and Aurora
Shoals in Torres Straits, and did not find any trace
of them to exist in the positions assigned to them on
the chart.
INFORMATION RECEIVED FROM BRITISH CONSUL AT
NOUMEA, DATED 23RD SEPTEMBER, 1878.
In August, 1878, about a fortnight after H.M.'s
schooner "Renard" had completed a re-survey of
the harbour, rendered necessary by the volcanic up-
heaval which took place in the Island of Tanna in
January, February, and June, 1878, another earth-
quake and extensive upheaval took place, and Port
Resolution is reported to be almost entirely destroyed.

secured by the debentures issued under the
Ordinance above cited, and falling due on the 1st
November next, will be paid on presentation of the
bonds on or after that date at the Bank of New
Zealand, London, or at the Bank of New Zealand,
Dunedin, whichsoever was the place at which the
last payment of interest on the respective bonds was
paid, viz. :-

Change of Purpose of Reserve in the Provincial
District of Canterbury.

IT is hereby notified that His Excellency the Go-
vernor intends, under the provisions of the one
hundred and forty-eighth section of "The Land Act,
1877," to change the specific purpose of the land
described in the second column of the Schedule
hereto, for which the land was heretofore set apart
as a reserve, as specified in the first column of the
said Schedule, to the specific purpose specified in
the third column of the said Schedule.
