THE following Notice to Mariners, received from
the Commissioner of Trade and Customs, Mel-
bourne, is published for general information.

SOUTH CHANNEL LIGHTS.
PILOTS, masters of vessels, and others are informed,
with the view of affording vessels leaving Melbourne
or Geelong for sea by the South Channel greater
facilities for picking up more rapidly the eastern or
shore light under Arthur's Seat, that—
A White Light will, on and after the 11th Novem-
ber next, be exhibited from the shore lighthouse, in
addition to the present red light.
This white light will be placed 40 feet below the
red light, and will only be seen between the same
bearings as the red light from the shore lighthouse—
viz., between S. by W. 1/2 W. and S.E. 1/4 E.
The white light should be seen in ordinary clear
weather at from 8 to 10 miles distant.
CAUTION.—Vessels, when to the northward of the
Middle Ground, will, by keeping the red and this
white in sight, be clear of danger. The previous
sailing directions for the South Channel Lights are
still to be strictly adhered to.

IN accordance with the By-laws for the New Zea-
land Railways fixed by Order in Council dated
the seventeenth day of April, 1877, the following
rates for the Onehunga Wharf are hereby declared
to be fixed in lieu of those published in the New
Zealand Gazette No. 35, of the nineteenth of April
last, and shall be paid by persons using the said wharf
on and from the fourteenth instant until altered.
