NOTES FOR JUNE, 1877.
Mongonui.—Tolerably fine; rain below average; the maximum recorded on 30th, 1.10 in.; prevailing winds southerly; stormy on 13th,
14th, and 15th, from N.W.; and on 18th and 19th, S.W. and showery; dense fog on 16th.
Auckland.—Early part bright, clear, and cool; middle stormy and unpleasant, chiefly from N.W., with rain; fine towards end of month
but colder; wind generally light and prevailing from S. and S.W. to N.W.; maximum rain recorded on 14th, 99 in.; slight thunder
on 18th; dense fog morning of 22nd.
Taranaki.—Fine to 9th; stormy from 14th to 18th, N.W. and S.W.; showery during middle of month; maximum rainfall recorded on
15th, 93 in., latter part fine; prevailing winds S.E., S.W., and N.W.; hail on 17th.
Napier.—Remarkably fine; only four days of rain, the greatest fall recorded on 4th, 61 in.; winds moderate, prevailing from S. and S.W.
Wellington.—Fine pleasant weather up to 10th, with light N.W. winds generally; remainder of month showery and dull; the maximum
rain recorded on the 15th, 1.150 in.; prevailing N.W. winds, and stormy from that quarter on nights of 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th, and
on 16th during the day, with rain, except on the 11th; thunder and lightning on 15th and 16th, and lightning only on 18th; fog on
4th and 5th.
Wanganui.—Commencement and latter part fine, but middle of month showery and unpleasant; prevailing W. winds, stormy on 17th
and 18th; maximum rain registered on 17th 73 in.
Nelson.—Small rainfall occurring during middle of month from the southward; otherwise fine and bright; strong northerly wind on 17th,
and 18th and on 19th stormy from S.W.; on 29th strong easterly wind; greatest rain recorded on 15th, 65 in.; fog on 9th; prevailing
S.E. wind.
Cape Campbell.—Fine dry weather, with moderate breezes prevailing from S. and W.; maximum rain recorded on 15th, 65 in.; showers
in middle of month.
Christchurch.—From 1st to 12th generally fine; middle of month showery, but total rain small, the maximum fall recorded on 15th
87 in.; end of month fine; strong N.W. gale on 16th; prevailing S.W. winds and moderate.
Bealey.—Very wet, cold, unpleasant weather, with an occasional fine day; maximum fall of rain on 13th, 5.600 in.; several heavy falls
during middle of month; prevailing N.W. wind, and at times strong; snow fell on 16th, 17th, and 21st; fog on 14th.
Hokitika.—Very wet, rain occurring chiefly during middle of month, the maximum recorded on 13th, 3.32 in.; prevailing E. winds and
often strong; thunder on 16th and 17th; fog on 20th.
Dunedin.—Fine to 10th, when it became changeable, S.W. squalls on 10th, 17th, 18th, and 19th; frequent showers but slight; the
maximum rainfall recorded on 13th, 502 in.; prevailing wind from S.W.; snow on 17th; fog on 24th.
Queenstown.—Fine for time of year; maximum rain recorded on 16th, 99 in.; very heavy rain also on night of 9th; prevailing N.W.
winds, but moderate; snow on 11th and 16th, but on high ground; thunder on 9th and 17th; fog on 5th, 6th, and 30th.
Southland.—Showery weather generally, especially during middle of month; the maximum rainfall recorded on 18th, 70 in.; prevailing
N.W. wind but moderate; thunder and hail on 17th, 18th, and 19th.
GENERAL REMARKS.
Except in the interior and on the west coast of the South Island, the rainfall has been small for the time of year, and on the whole
fine winter weather was experienced.
