NOTES FOR MARCH 1877.
Left Column Notes:
Mongonui.—Fine to 5th; very wet from 6th to 17th; remainder fine; on 11th, 2.08 in. rain recorded, on 12th, 6.39 in., making a total of
8.47 in. for two days, the largest amount ever recorded at this station in the same time; prevailing easterly winds, and strong on
7th, 9th, 10th, and 11th; thunder on 12th.
Auckland.—Fine generally; rain at intervals, occasionally heavy; greatest fall recorded on 13th, 1.00 in.; wind light throughout, and
prevailed from E.; fog on 27th.
Taranaki.—A very fine month; occasional showers; maximum rainfall on 13th, 52 in.; prevailing easterly winds.
Napier.—Generally fine; winds moderate, and prevailed from W. and S.W.; loud thunder on 14th, and slight on 20th; maximum rain
recorded on 19th, 52 in.
Wellington.—Very stormy from N.W. on the 3rd, barometer falling slightly, in night changed to S.E., and towards morning of 4th
rained heavily, 70 of an inch falling in less than an hour, and then cleared off; very fine bright pleasant weather from 4th to 17th;
came on rain in night of 17th, from S.E., and continued wet to 19th; stormy during night of 19th; fine from 20th to end of month,
though stormy on 28th and 29th from N.W.; prevailing wind N.W.
Wanganui.—
Nelson.—Remarkably fine throughout; prevailing westerly winds, moderate; maximum rainfall recorded on 20th, 47 in.; fog on 30th.
Cape Campbell.—Very fine weather with moderate breezes, chiefly from N.W.; strong, however, on 2nd and 3rd, N.W., and 13th and
19th, S.E.; maximum rain registered on 14th, 22 in.
Christchurch.—Fine throughout, a few slight showers, the maximum fall recorded on 18th, 37 in.; prevailing N.E. and S.W. winds,
and light.
Bealey.—Exceptionally fine and very pleasant throughout; greatest rainfall recorded on 18th, 880 in.; N.W. gale on 3rd; five days of
foggy weather; prevailing N.W. wind, and generally strong and steady.
Hokitika.—

Dunedin.—Very pleasant weather, with light showers; prevailing S.W. winds; frequent calms; maximum rain recorded on 17th, 458 in.
Queenstown.—Remarkably fine, winds light, prevailing from N.W.; occasional frosts at night; snow fell on hills on 6th and 31st; fog
on 10th; maximum rain registered on 4th, 69 in.
Southland.—Commencement and middle periods very unsettled, otherwise fine; wind from W. and light; hail on 7th; maximum rain
recorded on 17th, 61 in.
GENERAL REMARKS.
With the exception of the heavy fall of rain at Mongonui between the 6th and 17th, the weather throughout during this period was
exceedingly fine, with a remarkably small rainfall and generally light winds.
