performance, during a period of twelve months, com-
mencing from the second of July next, of any of the
under-mentioned steam services, viz.:-
- Between Wellington, Kaikoura, and Lyttelton,
and vice versa, fortnightly. - Between Nelson, Motueka, Collingwood, &c.
The voyage between Nelson and Motueka and vice
versa, to be performed twice weekly. The voyage
between Nelson aud Collingwood, and vice versa,
calling at Motupipi and Takaka, to be performed
once weekly. - Between Auckland, Kawau, Waiwera, and
Matakana, and vice versa, once weekly. - Between Helensville and Dargaville, and vice
versa, calling at Tokatoka, Whakatara, Te Koparu,
Aratapu, Mititai, and Mangawhare, once weekly;
and also twice weekly. - Between Helensville and Matakohe, and vice
versa, calling at Port Albert, Otamatea, and Pahi,
once weekly.
Tenderers should state the names, tonnage, and
horse-power of the vessels to be employed in the
service or services for which they tender.
Further particulars, and terms and conditions of
contract, may be obtained on applying to the General
Post Office, Wellington, or the Chief Post Offices at
Dunedin, Christchurch, Nelson, Hokitika, and
Auckland.
The lowest or any tender will not necessarily be
accepted.
Tenders to be addressed to the Hon. the Post-
master-General, Wellington, and endorsed "Tender
for Steam Service."

New Zealand Coastal Steam Services.
General Post Office,
Wellington, 29th May, 1877.
SEALED Tenders will be received at the General
Post Office Wellington, until NOON of
SATURDAY, the 21st JULY next, for the per-
formance, during a period of twelve months com-
mencing from a date hereafter to be fixed by the
Postmaster-General, of any of the under-mentioned
steam services, viz. :-
- Between Nelson, Westport, Greymouth, and
Hokitika, and vice versa, once every four weeks. - Between Port Chalmers and the West Coast
ports of the Middle Island, monthly. A steamer to
leave Port Chalmers once in every month, proceed-
ing to the West Coast of the Middle Island, by
way of Cook and Foveaux Straits, alternately. The
steamer to call at Lyttelton, Picton, Nelson, West-
port, Greymouth, Hokitika, and The Bluff; and also,
when required, at Oamaru, Timaru, Martin's Bay,
Milford Sound, Preservation Inlet, and Port William
in Stewart's Island; and at such other places as the
Postmaster-General may from time to time direct.
Tenderers should state the names, tonnage, and

RULES UNDER THE LAW PRACTITIONERS ACTS.
BY virtue of the powers vested in us by law, it is
ordered by us, the Judges of the said Court,
that the following Rules shall come into force on and
after Tuesday, the first day of January, 1877 :-
The existing Rules touching the examination and
proof of qualification of candidates for admission as
Barristers and Solicitors of the Supreme Court are
hereby repealed, and the following Rules are substi-
tuted for them :-
-
Every candidate for admission as a Barrister or
Solicitor of the Supreme Court shall give notice to
the Registrar of the Court at the place where he
intends to apply for admission, at least two months
before the time appointed for an examination, of his
desire to be examined, and shall state the nature of
the examination that he proposes to submit to; and
shall at the same time pay the proper fee in respect
of such examination. -
Candidates who are by law entitled to be ad-
mitted either as Barristers or Solicitors after an
examination only in their knowledge of the law of
New Zealand so far as it differs from the law of
England, may be examined at such times as the
Judge in each judicial district shall appoint. -
An examination of other candidates for admis-
sion as Barristers or Solicitors in law and general
knowledge shall be held, at every place where there
shall be an office of the Supreme Court, on the third
Monday in March and the third Monday in Septem-
ber in each year, and shall be continued from day to
day, omitting Court holidays. If the third Monday
in March shall be Easter Monday, the examination
shall commence on the Wednesday following. -
Candidates for admission either as Barristers or
Solicitors may be examined in general knowledge at
any examination held before or subsequently to the
commencement of any pupilage or service on which
the candidate relies for admission, and shall be ex-
amined in law at some examination held after the
expiration of any such period of pupilage or service,
or not more than six calendar months before the
expiration of such period: Provided that candidates
shall not be examined in both law and general know-
ledge at the same half-yearly examination; and no
candidate who is by law required to pass in general
knowledge shall be permitted to present himself for
examination in law until he has passed the examina-
tion in general knowledge. -
The half-yearly examinations will be conducted
by printed or written papers. The papers will be the
same throughout the colony, and in every place the
same papers will be set on the same day and at the
same hour. -
The examination in general knowledge for candi-
dates for admission as Barristers, and for candi-
dates for admission as Solicitors who are by law
required to pass the Barrister's examination, shall be
in the following subjects:-
(1.) Greek.-Translations from the Iliad, first four
Books. Herodotus, Second Book.
(2.) Latin.-Translations from Cicero "De Officiis,"
and First and Second Orations against Catiline. Satires
of Horace, First Book. Candidates will be expected
to show a competent knowledge of Greek and Latin
Grammar, and to answer such questions on Greek
and Roman history, geography, antiquities, and
literature as may arise out of the works in which
they are examined.
(3.) Euclid. First four books.
(4.) Algebra. To quadratic equations inclusive.
(5.) History.-Hallam's Constitutional History,
Hallam's Middle Ages, fifth, sixth, and eighth
chapters.
