Westland District assigned to Chief Justice Prendergast
and Mr. Justice Richmond.
NORMANBY, Governor.
ORDER IN COUNCIL.
At the Government House, at Wellington, this
sixth day of February, 1877.
Present :
HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR IN COUNCIL.
WHEREAS by "The Supreme Court Act, 1860,"
it is enacted that it shall be lawful for the
Governor in Council from time to time to divide the
colony into judicial districts for the purposes of the
said Act, and the limits of such districts from time
to time to alter as occasion may require, and that the
Governor in Council shall assign every such district
to a Judge or Judges of the Court, who shall have,
within the same, all the powers and jurisdiction
thereby given to the Court:
And whereas on the twelfth day of October, one
thousand eight hundred and sixty-five, in exercise
and pursuance of the powers conferred by the said
recited provisions of the said Act, a district called
"The Westland District" was formed and consti-
tuted by the Governor in Council:
And whereas on the second day of November, one
thousand eight hundred and sixty-nine, in further
exercise and pursuance of the said powers, the limits
of the said Westland District were altered:
And whereas, in exercise and pursuance of the said
powers, the said Westland District has been assigned
to Alexander James Johnston, Esquire, a Judge of
the Supreme Court:
And whereas it is expedient that the said West-
land District should also be assigned to the Judges
of the said Court hereinafter mentioned:
Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor, in
pursuance and exercise of all powers enabling him
in this behalf, doth hereby, with the advice and con-
sent of the Executive Council of New Zealand, also
assign the said Westland District unto
JAMES PRENDERGAST, Esquire,
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and
CHRISTOPHER WILLIAM RICHMOND, Esquire,
a Judge of the said Court.

Governor in Council shall assign every such district

by the Governor in Council:
And whereas on the twenty-sixth day of October,
one thousand eight hundred and sixty-seven, the said
Middle District was divided into two districts, called
respectively "The Wellington District" and "The
Nelson District":
And whereas on the second day of November, one
thousand eight hundred and sixty-nine, in further
exercise and pursuance of the said powers, the
limits of the said Nelson District were altered :
And whereas on the second day of November, One
thousand eight hundred and sixty-nine, in exercise
and pursuance of the said powers, the said Nelson
District was assigned to Christopher William Rich-
mond, Esquire, a Judge of the Supreme Court:
And whereas, the said Christopher William Rich-
mond having obtained leave of absence and left the
said colony for a time: the said Nelson District was
by Order in Council, on the third day of March, one
thousand eight hundred and seventy-five, assigned
to Thomas Bannatyne Gillies, Esquire, one of the
Judges of the said Court:
And whereas the leave of absence of the said
Christopher William Richmond has expired, and he
