Maritime and Land Notices

NOTICES TO MARINERS.

No. 17 of 1876.

Customs Department (Marine Branch),
Wellington, 19th July, 1876.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from
the Commodore commanding the Australian
Station, and from the harbour authorities of Victoria
and Queensland, are published for general informa--
tion.

GEO. MCLEAN,
Commissioner of Customs.

EXTRACT FROM REMARK BOOK OF NAVIGATING
LIEUT. HENRY HOSKEN OF H.M.S. "PEARL."

"Pearl," at Sea,
Lat. 23° 35' S., long. 170° 53′ E.,
15th June, 1876.

Hydrographical Memorandum No. 8.

THE following observations are communicated for
general information:-

Nanuku Passage, Fiji Group. - Probably the cor-
rection in latitude for Wailagilala Island, given by
Lieut. H. J. Rendell, in his survey of this passage,
should be extended to the neighbouring reefs, for a
line of heavy breakers was seen from the "Pearl"
E. by N. 7 miles from that island, extending two
miles to the eastward, supposed to be identical with
the Duff Reef, which is shown on Chart of Fiji, No.
2691, 6 miles to the S.W. W.

Levuka Harbour. - The Coral Knoll shown upon
Plan No. 1244, two-thirds of a cable S.S.W. from the
Half-Tide Rock, was blown down on the 8th June,
1876.

There is now at low tide a depth of 24 feet over
the spot.

A. H. HOSKINS,
Commodore.

To the Captains and Officers Commanding
Her Majesty's Ships on the Australian Station.

ADDITIONAL LIGHT, PORT ARLINGTON.

PILOTS, masters of vessels, and others, are hereby
informed that, on and after the 1st of July next, a
red light will be exhibited at Port Arlington, between
the bearings of W.S.W. and S.E. by E., so as to clear
Prince George's Bank and Shoal off Point Richards.

The light will be visible on a clear night about
seven (7) miles.

The present green light will continue to be shown
from the end of the jetty, and will be seen from any
point of the compass seaward.

CHARLES B. PAYNE,
Chief Harbour Master.

Melbourne, 21st June, 1876.

SANDY CAPE SHOAL.

As some doubt exists as to the distance which the
Bare Hill should be kept open west of the bush on
Bush Patch, in order to pass clear to the westward of
Sandy Cape Shoal, mariners are hereby advised that
when a vessel is on the line shown on the chart for
clearing the shoal to the westward, the relative
positions of the bush and Bare Hill will be just the
reverse of those shown by View D for clearing it to
the eastward. Care should be taken, however, not
to bring these marks on until the vessel is some 4
miles northward of the Cape, as within that distance
they lead very close to the outer edge of Breaksea
Spit.

G. P. HEATH, Commander, R.N.,
Portmaster.

Department of Ports and Harbours,
Brisbane, 14th June, 1876.

BEACONS, INNER ROUTE TO TORRES STRAITS.

THE Beacon originally placed on m. reef, near Cape
Grenville, is now erected on the north-west side of
Young Island.

The Beacon placed on the Islet on the north-west
end of k. reef, Piper Island, is removed; the Light-
ship now placed about one mile to the southward of
it rendering the Beacon unnecessary.

G. P. HEATH, Commander, R.N.,
Portmaster.
