Reduction of Rates on Postal Packets.

A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by the eighth section of "The New
Zealand Post Office Act, 1858," it is, amongst
other things, enacted that it shall be lawful for the
Governor in Council from time to time, by Proclama-
tion to be published in the New Zealand Gazette,
to fix, alter, and abolish the rates of postage at any
time payable within the colony for the transmission
of letters (in which term is included, amongst other
things, packets, newspapers, and books) by post between
places within New Zealand, and at what time the same
shall be paid, and that the postage so made payable
shall be charged and paid accordingly: And where-
as by Proclamation duly made and issued, bearing
date the twelfth day of October, one thousand eight
hundred and seventy-five, the Governor in Council
did, in pursuance of the said recited power and
authority, fix certain rates of postage, and the times
at which the same respectively should be paid as
therein mentioned: And whereas it is desirable
that the rates on book packets and pattern parcels
posted in the colony for delivery within the colony
should be altered, and that other rates of postage
should be fixed as hereinafter mentioned:

Now therefore, His Excellency the Governor of
New Zealand, in exercise of the said recited power
and authority, and with the advice and consent of
the Executive Council thereof, doth hereby abolish
all former rates of postage fixed to be paid within
the colony on book packets and pattern parcels
for delivery within the colony, and doth proclaim
and declare that the postage payable on all book
packets and pattern parcels posted in the colony
for delivery within the colony shall be according to
the rates mentioned in the Schedule hereto, and that
such postage shall in all cases be paid at the time
such book packets and pattern parcels are delivered
into the post; and, with the like advice and consent as
aforesaid, doth further proclaim and declare that this
Proclamation shall take effect from and after the

first day of February, one thousand eight hundred
and seventy-six.

SCHEDULE.

BOOK PACKETS AND PATTERN PARCELS.

No book packet must exceed 5 lbs. in weight, and no pattern
parcel 24 oz. in weight.

For delivery at or from the same Post Office at which
the same are posted, or at or from any other
Post Office within the colonyβ€”

Not exceeding two ounces in weight ... s. d.
0 1
Above two ounces but not exceeding four
ounces in weight ... 0 2
Every additional four ounces or fraction of
four ounces in weight ... 0 2

Given under the hand of His Excellency the
Most Honorable George Augustus Con-
stantine, Marquis of Normanby, Earl
of Mulgrave, Viscount Normanby, and
Baron Mulgrave of Mulgrave, all in the
County of York, in the Peerage of the
United Kingdom; and Baron Mulgrave
of New Ross, in the County of Wexford,
in the Peerage of Ireland; a Member of
Her Majesty's Most Honorable Privy
Council; Knight Commander of the
Most Distinguished Order of Saint
Michael and Saint George; Governor and
Commander-in-Chief in and over Her
Majesty's Colony of New Zealand and its
Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the
same; and issued under the Seal of the
said Colony, at Wellington, this twenty-
seventh day of January, in the year of
our Lord one thousand eight hundred
and seventy-six.
