Negotiations for the Purchase of Native Lands.

NORMANBY, Governor.

WHEREAS by "The Immigration and Public
Works Act Amendment Act, 1871," the Go-
vernor is, among other things, empowered to enter
into arrangements for the acquisition of particular
portions of land in the North Island, for the purpose
of mining for gold, for the establishment of special
settlements, or for the purposes of railway construc-
tion; and by the said Act it is also provided that it
shall be lawful for the Governor, whenever he shall
have determined to enter into negotiations for the
purchase of such land, to insert a notice in the New
Zealand Gazette
that it is his intention to enter into
such negotiations, and after such notice is inserted
it shall not be lawful for any one to purchase or acquire
from the Native owners any right, title, or interest,
or contract for the purchase or acquisition from the
Native owners of any right, title, or interest, in the
lands specified in such notice, unless the notice be
cancelled by the Governor: Provided that no such
notice shall have longer operation than for the period
of two years:

Now therefore, I, George Augustus Constantine,
Marquis of Normanby, the Governor of the Colony
of New Zealand, in pursuance of the provisions of the
hereinbefore in part recited Act, and in exercise of
the powers thereby vested in me, do hereby give notice
that it is my intention forthwith to enter into negotia-
tions for the purchase from the Native owners of the
blocks or parcels of land situate in the Province of
Auckland and described in the Schedule hereto.

SCHEDULE.

PIRAUAU.

ALL that block of land situated in the District of
Tokomaru known as Pirauau or Tuakau, containing by
admeasurement twelve thousand six hundred and
twelve (12,612) acres.

TAUWHAREPARAE.

All that block of land in the District of Tokomaru
and Anaura, bounded on the North by Pirauau Block;
on the West by Te Mata River from Pirauau Block
to Tutamoe; on the South by Parariki, Ngatawaka-
waka, Mangatokerau, Tahutahupo, and Anaura Blocks;
on the East by the sea from Waipare to Omanuka, by
a Native Reserve, and by Tokomaru Block.

TE PARITU.

All that block of land in the District of Turanga,
bounded on the East by the sea from Te Papaki a te
Hikakino to Waikara; thence on the North by a
line to Whakaurara, Marunga; thence on the West
by a line to Te Puni; thence on the South by a line
to Porongo i Waho; thence by Takararoa Block to
the first point.

WAIMATA.

All that block of land in the District of Poverty
Bay, bounded on the South and East by Whatau-
poko, Powawa, and Whangara Blocks; on the North
by a Native reserve, by Ngawhakatatara, Rangiko-
hua, and Arakihi Blocks; on the West by Te Whaka-
roa and Waimata West Blocks.

Given under the hand of His Excellency the
Most Honorable George Augustus Con-
stantine, Marquis of Normanby, Earl of
Mulgrave, Viscount Normanby, and Baron
Mulgrave of Mulgrave, all in the County
of York, in the Peerage of the United
Kingdom; and Baron Mulgrave of New
Ross, in the County of Wexford, in the
Peerage of Ireland; a Member of Her
Majesty's Most Honorable Privy Coun-
cil; Knight Commander of the Most
Distinguished Order of Saint Michael
and Saint George; Governor and Com-
mander-in-Chief in and over Her Ma-
jesty's Colony of New Zealand and its
Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the
same; at the Government House at Wel-
lington, this fifteenth day of February,
one thousand eight hundred and seventy-
six.
