Of the deaths, males contributed 88; females, 72: 90 of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 56.25 of
the whole number; 73 of these were of children under 1 year of age.
The deaths of children under 1 year of age were 28 more than in December; while the deaths of those between 1 and
5 years were 1 less in number.
There were 2 deaths of persons of 65 and upwards, -1 male of 65 in Auckland, and 1 of 66 in Nelson.
The following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 years of age and 5 years and upwards, and
the proportions per cent. of Deaths from each cause in the Boroughs named, and that were registered, during the month of
January, 1875.

The deaths from Zymotic Diseases were 15 more than in December,—of these the deaths from Measles were only 2, both
in Wellington. The deaths from Diphtheria increased from 1 to 4, 3 of which occurred in Dunedin, and 1 in Christchurch.
Diarrhœa (with Dysentery and Infantile Cholera) have increased from 12 to 30,—13 of these cases occurred in Wellington, and
12 in Christchurch, in which the deaths from Dysentery took place. Deaths from Constitutional Diseases were increased by 3;
Cancer causing 3 more than in December. Violent Deaths show a large increase in January over the December deaths of
the same character, which were only 4.
