tion, in the Boroughs of Auckland, Thames, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Hokitika, during the Month

N.B. Although the Auckland and Hokitika Hospitals are situated outside the boundaries of the respective boroughs, yet
the deaths in them have, for the sake of uniformity, been included in this Report.

The population has been estimated by adding the excess of births over deaths since the 1st March, 1874, to the then census
population. It is impossible to estimate the increase from immigration. The excess of births over deaths in the respective
boroughs to the 1st January was as follows:-Auckland, 315; Thames, 145; Wellington, 259; Nelson, 123; Christchurch, 214;
Dunedin, 403; Hokitika, 80.

The births were 277 in January, 10 more than in December, but fewer than in either of the four months preceding December.
The deaths were 30 more in number than the deaths in December, and exceeded by 20 the deaths in February last, when
they were more numerous than in any other month of 1874. Of these 30 deaths, 5 were in the above-mentioned Hospitals;
the deaths in which were not included in the previous reports.
