Customs Department (Marine Branch),
Wellington, 3rd November, 1875.
THE following Notice to Mariners is published
for general information.
WILLIAM H. REYNOLDS.
LIGHT AT CAPE BOWLING-GREEN.
In consequence of great changes having taken place
in the formation of the outlying banks off Cape
Bowling-Green, which have allowed the sea to make
serious inroads upon the shore, it may probably be
necessary to remove the present Lighthouse.
Masters of vessels are therefore cautioned that
the present revolving light may probably be replaced
shortly by a temporary fixed light, until some more
permanent arrangement can be made.
The temporary light will be visible from a distance
of nine or ten miles.
G. P. HEATH, Commander R.N.,
Portmaster.
Department of Ports and Harbours,
Brisbane, 7th October, 1875.
NOTICE TO MARINERS.
No. 25 of 1875.
WEST COAST OF MIDDLE ISLAND.
Customs Department (Marine Branch),
Wellington, 3rd November, 1875.
NOTICE is hereby given, that the danger off
Kiourangi Point, West Coast of Middle Island,
has been surveyed and found to be a most dangerous
rocky shoal, of nearly three quarters of a mile long
by half a mile broad, having near its southern end a
shallow patch with only 3½ fathoms on it, Kiourangi
Point bearing S. 30° E. (magnetic), distant 4¼ miles.
Vessels should approach this danger very cautiously
in heavy weather, as the sea breaks heavily for a con-
siderable distance. The passage inshore is about 3½
miles wide, and is clear of danger.
Notice is also given, that the shallow banks inside
the Steeples, Cape Foulwind, and the entrance to
the Buller River, have been surveyed. Masters of
vessels taking shelter inside the Steeples should, with
the wind from seaward, get underweigh on the ebb
as the flood sets on the Steeples. Vessels bound for
the Buller should be guided by the signals exhibited
on the flagstaff, and steer in as shown by the sema-
phore arm, as a strong current is sometimes felt
across the entrance and on the bar.
The bar bears from the outer Steeple E. ⅜ N.
magnetic, distant 5½ miles. The lighthouse on Cape
Foulwind is in course of construction, and the light,
which will be revolving, once every half-minute, is
expected to be ready for lighting about June or
July 1876.
The position of the flagstaff at the Buller is-lati-
tude, 41° 45′ 55" S.; and longitude, 171° 42′ 7" E.
Charts of Kiourangi Shoal and Buller Entrance
can be procured at the principal Custom Houses.
