town in which the nearest Supreme Court Office for
the District is situate. If the writ be taken out by
a Solicitor, then it shall be at the office of such
Solicitor, or his agent in such town. If taken out by
the plaintiff in person, then at the residence of the
plaintiff, if his residence be not more than three
miles from the said Supreme Court Office; but if
beyond that distance, then at some other place, to be
called his "Address for service," which shall not be
more than three miles from such office.
- When the defendant shall reside within any such
Judicial District as aforesaid, and shall appear or
plead in person, his address for service shall be some
convenient place not more than three miles from the
nearest Supreme Court Office for the District.

per annum, PAYABLE IN ADVANCE.
An extra subscription of 10s. to the Gazette will entitle each
yearly subscriber to the Acts of the General Assembly as pub-
lished during the year.
Single copies of the Gazette, 1s. each, may be procured through
any Bookseller.
ADVERTISEMENTs will be charged for according to the
following scale:—

Headings, date lines, signatures, &c., re-
quiring to be printed in separate lines, to

Half-yearly Statements of Affairs of Mining

20s., with 6d. per line added for the
name of each shareholder.
All advertisements should be written on one side of the paper,
and signatures, &c., should be written in a legible hand.
The number of insertions required must be written across
the face of the advertisement.

N.B.—The Auckland and Hokitika Hospitals are outside the boundaries of the respective boroughs.
The persons on board ships are not included in the numbers of the population.
The births were 267 in December, against 292 in November; the deaths were 22 more in number than the deaths in
November.
Of the deaths, males contributed 69; females, 61: 63 of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 48·46 of the
whole number; 45 of these were of children under 1 year of age.
The deaths of children under 5 years of age were 10 more than those in November.
There was 1 death of a person of 65 years of age or upwards, viz. 1 male of 80 at Wellington.
The following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 years of age and 5 years and upwards, and
the proportions per cent. of Deaths from each cause in the Boroughs named, and that were registered, during the month of
December, 1874.
